I always use iTunes or Amazon, but they're not exactly cheap. :(

No, for mp3 files they're totally f**king not! Their mp3 albums are just as expensive as their CD versions :S
I've seen some Russian sites where each track is around 10/20p and albums are going for around £1.50. But I'm not too sure I want to surrender my credit card details to them, that's why I asked really, see if anyone knows a good honest site with prices like that.

You just have to check between Amazon and iTunes, just see which is cheaper.

At those prices the artists won't get anything, might as well just pirate the albums.

Hmmm, that's a good point. But I dunno how it works - maybe they just end up with hundreds of thousands rather than millions of millions?
I'd settle for that if I were them - people do a lot more than they do for a lot lot less.

Far be it for me to make this argument, but musicians aren't as rich as that would suppose. The people who make the music worth listening to probably aren't terribly rich.

Well I don't know either.
Whatever the case though, download albums ought to be much cheaper than they're being sold for on sites like iTunes. They used to have the excuse of manufacturing costs for CD cases, covers etc - obviously something that doesn't apply to a handful of mp3 files.

Kind of arguing myself into just doing piracy now :D

It costs less than 50p to produce the average unit. They're lying bastards.

Does anyone here pay to download albums?

Yes, because otherwise myself and friends lose our jobs.

Most of the cost comes from marketing or from producing the songs. I'm sure recording studio time is very precious, it's a commodity and probably one that's terribly in demand. I don't think record companies ever claimed that the majority of the costs were made up in manufacture, that's just one part of many costs. I think most CDs are fairly priced, buy music if you can. There is no moral argument for piracy, it's probably never right.

Don't let it sound like my horse is so high, I download most of the music I have on my computer. I own around 60 albums from my 17 years. I've tried to strike up a policy of buying CDs of the smaller artists I like, or going to their shows. Even so I have an addiction which I could never maintain financially.

I'm fairly sure I have nothing made by your record company Ellie so it's okay for you. ;) :P

I'm pretty sure you have something that my company deals with... in fact I'd bet nearly every single person does on this site to be honest.

I just checked Ellie (I am only guessing who you work for though) I think I own two CDs by bands maintained by your company. I've pirated two from you guys.

I don't know what that means morally. :P

I'm just making a point, that everyone (people you know) in the Music Industry suffers everytime people download music illegally. I can understand why you, anyone, does it.

Of course I don't know, but I'm guessing you wouldn't think twice about it if you didn't work where you do - yet there would still be plenty of people at work doing your job and others.

I'd like to start a trend of non-piracy though, seeing as I'm going to be famous myself soon :P

Actually, I've never downloaded illegally, but that would be because I can't "break rules".

Not me. I will not steal in any concept. Pirate music is stealing...period.
