I would seriously consider ditching Word and downloading Open Office for free.

I once used Open Office but I couldn't understand the set ups for scripts etc plus all my docs are on words although I have emailed them all to myself.
The docs don't save on word, it doesn't matter which programme you use. They'll all just be chilling out in My Documents.
The problem is probably NOT with Word if it's just taking a couple of seconds to open and the toolbar goes a strange colour.

oh I see, so does that mean that I could open the docs with Open Office?

Do you think it likely that a virus has affected it? I do have Norton and this PC is clear of any at present
When I click on 'Word' the screen goes blank then comes back on, an error notice comes up saying it can't find Abbyy etc, I click ok then I can get into word.
When I come out of Word, again the screen goes blank momentarily and the borders go back to the original colour i.e...blue

It seems your PC has, or once had, a scanner in its system to allow you to photocopy printed pages into your PC and then edit them using Word.
Abbyy came with the scanner and was installed along with the software for the scanner.
Since that day, it has loaded along with Word. Now, it's become unloadable for some reason and your system is telling you it's trying to load it but can't find it.
Maybe, of course, Abbyy came along free with your PC when it was new but if you DO have a scanner, you should still have the installation disc(s) - which should include Abbyy, which you can reinstall.
Be all that as it may, its absence should not affect the performance of Word.

I have tried to download this and it says, your security settings will not allow this download!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Truly P*ssed off now
Near the top left of any web page, click Tools
then Internet Options
then Security
then Custom Level
From that window you can enable the options to allow you to download.
I'll try it tomorrow, am knackered right now

If you're not using Abbyy to manipulate scanned documents I'd probablly recommend deleting the program, following VV's instructions from the Control Panel use the Add/remove programs to remove it.
If that doesn't work send me a PM, I can suggest alternatives
