Am I the only who reads this and thinks "so what?"

The prize, unless I am mistaken is that:

"you may even get the chance of having your work performed at our Sitcom Showcase"

You may?

They clearly have a lot of faith with the quality of the entries and the potential winner.

If there was a serious desire to develop new talent, then the prize for a organisation the size of the beeb must surely be a pilot to be broadcase on BBC3.

Surely to God out of the 1000's of enteries they get they would be able to whittle it down to one that would be of broadcastable quality.

The workshop alone is a good prize!

Gotta say a pilot costs thousands and thousands, I'd prefer the BBC didn't spend my license fee on super duper prizes.

But maybe a show case for short scripts acted as readings on a shoe string could work?

If you've been commissioned for Newsjack does that rule you out of entering this competition?

I think it means commissioned as in 'we will pay you money to write this' rather than Newsjack's 'nicely written; here is some money for it'.

'Network commission' I'm reading as 'paid for something to be put on telly'.

I would have thought so too, it would rule out too many people

Also, am I right in saying that, unlike the sitcommission, it doesn't have to be an audience-based sitcom? Or does the fact that there will be a showcase mean it can't be a single-camera non-audience sitcom?

I would worry about making it "Bold, funny and original" and not worry about the audience/non-audience thing. That can be a problem for the workshops if it gets that far!

I failed.

I saw the 2010 winner, 'Thunderer!' at Edinburgh and it is absolutely ace.

The writing was sharp, the jokes moved the plot forwards and it's one of the best things I've seen - Hattrick have got hold of it and I hope they make it. Superb stuff.

I predict a dip in BCG posts in January with the biggest dips in the week before the deadline. This will be followed with a flurry of excuses why members didn't actually send anything off etc. I will be selling excuses for £100 per time (I have reserved the best ones for me). :D

Great opportunity and great timing! Have next week off from work so plenty of time to get cracking on this. A big opportunity like this from the BBC only seems to come around every couple of years so well worth entering. I can't believe someone on here was complaining about it. At least it's a foot in the door. I think you have to be prepared to acknowledge that you might need some support and coaching to get up to the standard that they will be looking for. I think they're more likely to give you the opportunity to join a team of writers or to do little bits and pieces before they look to comissioning your idea for a sitcom. I wonder if you get through to the workshop day or week if you actually get to meet Simon Nye?

Can I have 2 BBC only read efnic minority scripts and a blind judge please. Cheques in the post and I'll still respect you in the morning.

Not clever of me to help any competition opposition, but has anyone else noted that the brief for Laughing Stock talks about 15-30 *minute* script whereas the rules talk about a 15-30 *page* script?

My BBC TV script format typically runs to 50-60 pages for a 30 minute show (I work on the calculation that 350 speeches is roughly 30 minutes of show and this typically comes in on the 50-60 page count), so I'd satisfy one rule but be automatically out of the running because of the other rule. Nasty.

Try using a smaller font, Grem, this should half the number of pages.
