18. Canterbury Tales

10 The Winter Palace in St Petersburg

Spent a day looking around it in the late 70s (was Leningrad then). It is f**king mind boggling and could have easily spent the two weeks I was in Russia just looking at all the collections there.

Fabulous treasures that defy description.

18. My cousin and I share a herd of x cows? We take them to market and sell them all for £x each. We decide to split the money equally at the end of the day. All the money is in ten pound notes except for a small number of pound coins (fewer than ten). We took turns to take a ten pound note. I took the first one and also the last one. My cousin then had one less note than me, so I gave him all the coins. He still had less money than me, so I wrote him a cheque for the difference. How much was the cheque for? £2. See below for workings

19. What connects these pictures: Chaucer's Canterbury Tales (Franklin; Reeve; Parson; Miller; Squire)

20. Unscramble the two words : A A C C D J K O R W W CROW & JACKDAW
Maths Workings
Since we sell x cows for £x each, the total amount of money we make is £x^2. In other words, the total is a square number.
Since I take a the first and last note , there must be an odd number of £10 notes. In other words the number in the 10's place of the total amount earned must be odd.
Any perfect square with an odd number in the 10's place always has a 6 in the unit's place (check it out - it's true). Therefore we must have £6 in coins.
If I have an extra £10 and my cousin has the £6, then the difference is £4, and I have to write a cheque for £2 to even things out.
