It's not the genre that's the problem, it's simply bad shows in that genre. Broad-humoured studio audience sitcoms used to be done to death. Some of them were very funny, some appalling. The wheel comes full circle and now Miranda is seen as fresh and original. In some ways it is, but it's not the genre/style of the show that makes it funny, it's just some very nice writing, performances and production.
People's personal tastes naturally vary, but objectively there are only two kinds of comedy - funny and unfunny. Rev, for example, was a pretty big hit this year. It certainly had elements of "awkward" or "cringe" comedy, but that was leavened by more traditional and upbeat humour.
Most of the "bad" awkward comedy shows have not been bad because of the style of humour, but due to the concept, writing and execution.
