The Enemy - Away From Here
Welcome by Santana (about 1975 I think)
Quote: zooo @ July 13 2008, 12:16 PM BSTThe Beatles are a bit overrated. But they do actually have the music to back it up. Whereas Oasis don't. At all.
I strongly disagree with you, about the Beatles being overrated. Remember, with them, it wasn't just about quality, it was quantity as well. They were only together for about 9-and-a-half years, and they produced so much work. Then there's the fact that not one, not two, but three members of the group were lauded as being genius songwriters (Frank Sinatra once hailed George Harrison's 'Something', as the greatest Love song of all time). Oh, and one way the Beatles definately managed to outdo Oasis, was that they'd make each of their songs sound different from the last. They even won an Oscar, for Christ's sake! For me, the only artist that managed to equal them for greatness was James Brown. He also produced a massive amount of amazing work, he created Funk music, which spawned countless other genres of Dance music, he's the world's most sampled artist, and just for good measure, he is even cited as being partly responsible for the creation of Breakdancing! If the Beatles were the Fantastic Four, James Brown would be the Silver Surfer.
I think the Beatles are amazing.
All I mean is that people think it's automatically a fact that they are 'the best band ever'. When each individual should put some more thought into it and decide which band they really like best, not who it is accepted is 'the best' empirically. That is all.
It's not anything to do with them that they are overrated, just other people.
They're still shit.

The silver surfer didn't have a cape Totally agree about The Beatles. The quantity and quality of their work speaks for itself.
Oasis aren't in the same league. To use another footballing term, they don't have a strong enough squad.
This is one of my favourite Beatles clips: http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=GMrKKDNgt5g It's not my favourite song of their's, it's just a great clip.
Stop the Oasis hating!
I think both bands are brilliant, but personally I prefer Oasis to The Beatles. Sure, in the 9 years The Beatles were together they put out some amazing songs, but there was a bit of garbage in there too (same can be said about Oasis).
Even though I prefer Oasis' music, I can't deny that in terms of importance and influence on others, The Beatles were far greater. If there wasn't The Beatles, there wouldn't have been Oasis, and a hell of a lot of other bands too.
It's all subjective, mind. There are some people (heaven help them) on this planet who will think that Busted were better than The Beatles. Whether they deserve to live on this planet is another matter.
Come on people! Let's be open minded! No music nazis please! All music is equal.
Except Coldplay.
Well said.
It's OK to like Oasis because they WERE good. But you really can't compare them to the Beatles even though Oasis obviously based a lot of their sound on them.
I wasn't going to get drawn in because Aaron is obviously trying to be confrontational.
The Beatles unquestionably were brilliant and inspired and invfluenced so many people after them. They wrote 100s of songs which have spawnwed thousands of covers. I was neve a massive fan but they most definitely aren't shit!
I can't see the comparison with James Brown though. He may have influenced and triggered a lot of things in black music but not to the extent that the Beatles were internationally renowned.
As Lennon said they were bigger than Jesus at the time and I don't think he meant it in a pompous or derogatory manner.
Right - I need to lie down and listen to my CD of My Aim is True by Elvis Costello with Watching the Detectives which was never on the original vinyl album.
I don't like James Brown. Or his music. But mainly his disturbing hair.
good point well made Mr. Chapman

Nah, I really do think that they're just shit.
(Or at least extremely overrated.)
