Er - surely it's just Pixies - not THE Pixies.

Frank Black himself and other members of the band, and the music media and announcers generally talk about "the Pixies". If I were writing a contract or a formal list of bands, then I'd use just "Pixies" -- but in general writing I'd follow convention and use the definite article.

Frank Black says the record company advised the Pixies to drop the "the" to be cooler. And he says it's not important:

Thompson: We were like, "Record label? London? Party! Cool! What do we do?" It wasn't because we were desperate; it was because it was action. All the stuff they were talking about, whether it was a record producer or a particular song, or whether the name of the band was going to be Pixies or the Pixies -- they dropped the the because they thought it was cooler to call [us] Pixies -- all this stuff was just not important. The important thing was that we were going to go in a studio, we were going to go on tour, we were going to put a record out.

Hope this clears things up.

Sorry. I'm no expert but someone I knew was a big fan and said there was definitely no "The".

Just bought an album including the following which I had as a single in the 1970s. Maybe the first Deutsche Gramophon single.

Luckily for you, I am a bigger expert than your friend. So I can repeat, in case you missed it the first time: Charles Thompson (alias Black Francis alias Frank Black) and the rest of the Pixies usually refer to their band as "the Pixies".

Is that clear enough? The guys in the Pixies call themselves "the Pixies".

It was just their first record company, 4AD, that dropped the "the", as the company thought it would be cooler that way. As Frank Black says, it's not important. OK? So while the records and contracts just say "Pixies" -- the band members call themselves "the Pixies" and so do most of their fans.

Tell your friend to get a life and to stop wasting time by using you as a proxy for pointless battles of pathetic online oneupmanship over the official omission of the definite article from an old band's name.

Hope that clears things up.

No - I was responding to your explanation. No repetition necessary.

I don't know if this will stream outside of the United States, but NPR is previewing an upcoming Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute album by major Latin Alternative bands like Los Lobos, Ozomatli and Los Lonely Boys:
