Yes, I was going to say Wade goes back a great deal further. On checking, it was probably the best song of 1901. The net's a wonderful thing. And a special mention for the Staple Singers as they are always worth it.

Melanie C with Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra , which they have released recently. Never thought I would say this about a Spice Girl, but she is good - good voice, good take on the song, this though is a crap video - WTF is she wearing!?

How can such a fragile mind not create such beauty? Not that fragility is necessary. I speak a lot about the big contribution of Robert Kirby but it was oddly Harry Robertson who did most of the strings on "River Man" which is surely the best of the lot. Sometimes such things just happen because of events as they unfold.

She was the only one with a real voice and if she selected the right material she could be massive.

I like the way you accommodate different strands of the 70s etc. As well as being one of the best music decades, it was also the one with the most silos, ie, most people identifying with scenes based on genres.

"Reminiscing" wouldn't have been given the time of day among most of my age group then but it's great for what it is - an adult production from an era when "adult" was a distinct concept. I'd very much like to see more songcraft today, whether smooth or raucous. Punk would have got nowhere commercially with the current non-structures. It's not that everything needs solid structure. Only the stuff that claims it has it.

Two finer examples of American-friendly soft rock bands would be hard to come by, though I'll always plump for 'Diamond Girl' over 'Summer Breeze' when it comes to S&C.

Amongst many other joys the LRB track contains the wonderful bass-playing of George McArdle - he only made two albums with them before abandoning rock for the church, but he is surely one of the great bassists of all time. Bonnie Raitt was said to have been an admirer, which says it all really!
