VICTOR LIDIO JARA MARTINEZ
September 28, 1932 - September 16, 1973
Victor Jara was a teacher, poet, singer-songwriter and committed member of the Communist Party of Chile. A distinguished theatre director, he directed works from local plays to world classics. He played a pivotal role among neo-folkloric artists who established the Nueva Canción Chilena (New Chilean Song) movement. The movement led to a revolution in the popular music of Chile under the Salvador Allende government.

Caminando Caminando - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkAy7VgF2f0
El Derecho De Vivir en Paz - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCQrf0SHix8
Shortly after the Chilean coup of 11 September 1973, he was arrested, tortured and ultimately shot dead with 44 machine-gun bullets. His body was later thrown out into the street of a shanty town in Santiago. The contrast between the themes of his songs, on love, peace and social justice and the brutal way in which he was murdered transformed Jara into a symbol of struggle for human rights and justice worldwide.
Enjoyed Koko and Jim Diamond (PhD)
Never quite got into Victor Jara - I suspect I would enjoy him more if my Spanish was up to the job, but that said those tracks, particularly the first two, are rather nice.
