No, you didn't, you're right, though you did say you have to want to hang out with the characters if they were real, which isn't true. I love Bottom, for example, but I certainly wouldn't want to visit or talk to those characters. You can most definitely watch and enjoy a sitcom featuring characters you wouldn't want to meet or emulate.

For me, it's not so much a matter of wanting to be a character, as having some empathy for their situation. I wouldn't want to be locked up, but I'd like to think I could flourish like Fletcher if I was. I wouldn't want Basil Fawlty's life, but I can understand how he gets so angry, faced with a dragon-wife & incompetent staff. Of course, it's a personal thing, which is why I find How Not to Live Your Life uncomfortable sometimes, because I don't want to imagine myself as being as selfish as Don. It's still pretty good to laugh at him at such times, but I'd rather laugh with him a bit more.
