Without children attending school today there are some children who would never be talked to in a civil manner, never know what it is to be cared for, never read a book to an adult, never be read a story to, have a change of uniform from the clothes they've worn for the last three weeks, never eat breakfast or lunch.
And I haven't even started on the education bit.

I couldn't agree more. Admittedly though Roscoff, we could be a bit biased. 
Little true Dickensian story for you all. A friend of mine teaches in a comp in a particularly run down part of Manchester. He runs a very successful orchestra on a Saturday morning. So popular is it that he now runs a junior and senior orchestra. Why is it successful? The first thing he and the head of department do is cook the kids breakfast. Not bacon and eggs, just toast and stuff. The trade off being that you must either be playing or learn to play a musical instrument.
Feed them and they will come.
