Graham Crowden was also in The Sun Trap. A sitcom about ex patriots on a Mediterranean island. He played a retired diplomat, who whenever some one mentioned somewhere, he came out with an anecdote about when he said or did something to cause a diplomatic incident.

It was good when Davies wasn't just sexing-up adapting novels for TV. Did you ever see the 1989 BBC One Christmas single comedy-drama he wrote - Ball-Trap On The Cote Sauvage? It starred Jack Shepherd, Zoe Wanamaker, Miranda Richardson and Michael Kitchen. Both dark and funny and the sort of the thing the BBC used to consider worthy of a primetime Christmas slot.
The title rings a distant bell though I don't recognise it from the cast. I remember his screen two film Lucky Sunil with the sublime Kulvinder Ghir.
He also wrote both Marmalade Atkins series back in the day
