Must be a fight or a James Cotter post.
Ah its a fight.
Seems to me that this sort of thing can go down badly with some. So probably best avoid in the first place.

To me, a crap comedian who is decapitated by his own spinning bow tie would give you the same joke structure but without the dodgy racial element. You might argue that the crap comedian and the racist one don't deserve the same savaging but I think it could work just as well, structure-wise.
Taking the weight of debate thus far on board I've decided to soften the jokes by outright stealing the one's Steve wrote. I trust everyone will now be happy.
Quote: Steve Sunshine @ October 20 2010, 8:29 PM BSTI don't know, I'm not really part of any groups that you'd get in trouble for insulting.
But I'd hope I'd still be able to tell the difference between malice & ignorance.
But at the very least tell when something is a parody or just trying to make a point.
I thought you were a Vietnamese Mormon?
Yeah well who isn't these days.
Still didn't get me a council house did it?
I thought the point of the sketch is 'if you tell racist or anti-Semitic jokes you will die a nasty death'. That's quite a deterrent!
As Big Fella says it's probably best to leave this kind of stuff alone as you're bound to offend someone.
Quote: bushbaby @ October 20 2010, 8:25 PM BSTWhatever you say David, I will forever more look upon you as a racist
Is this a joke? It's just, if it isn't some sort of deadpan humour, then, well, you're being a smidge foolish.

Wouldn't that be the death of satire though?

David, your type of satire has been taboo for years. The only remotest punchline that could possibly excuse it is if God appeared and cut his head off

Why on Earth would bringing some God into it make it any less "taboo"?
Because that's the comeuppance of bigots
Quote: David Bussell @ October 20 2010, 9:43 PM BSTWouldn't that be the death of satire though?
Maybe.
But are you a freedom fighter battling to uphold the value of satire or trying to breaking into the big time as a comedy writer and performer?
If it's the second one, then why give anyone the chance of throwing stuff at you?
You know what I'm saying.

Taking the piss out of racists is not taboo.
Quote: Matthew Stott @ October 20 2010, 7:22 PM BSTBut that's the whole point.
(I'll just point out that the sketch itself does nothing for me personally)
It's not a good point which you are also making.
Quote: bushbaby @ October 20 2010, 3:51 PM BSTI can't believe this. You all so attacked me when I wanted to cast two blacks in a sitcom!!
Quote: Leevil @ October 20 2010, 3:52 PM BSTYes but they were played by white guys.
I'm too young to remember, but my dad would often regale me with stories of The Black And White Minstrels. This show has latterly become synonymous with racism and stereotyping, however I believe this show did nothing to encourage racial hatred, indeed the coloureds who lived next door to us never once complained about it blaring through the wall at them. Sometimes my dad would jump up from behind their fence and burst into a rendition of Al Jolson's 'Mammy'. I never once saw the Bhatnagars offended of upset at what my father did. They would just nod politely and smile. I guess they knew that, beneath his insane rantings, lay a man who had never given anything to the world. They knew that, statistically, THEIR children would be better educated, be more likely to go in to further education, become more worth while citizens. The Bhatnagars were more spiritual, more at ease with themselves and would not let themselves be bothered with petty PC agendas. As they smiled politely and nodded, they knew this to be true and I'm pretty sure that if they had bothered their backsides to learn an inch of the Queen's English then they would have relayed all this to my dad.
My point is I don't think we should be chastising bushbaby simply because she has written a script in which a white man pretends to be a black man. I'm pretty sure that if it were the other way around then we would all think that it was fine and dandy.

It would be good if you explained yourself there, as I'm not sure what you mean.
