Cowboys having a picnic

EXT. PICNIC AREA - DAY.

3 Cowboys NED, TEX, and BILL. are sitting at a picnic table.

NED:
Can a man get a drink round here Bill?

BILL pours NED some tea from a flask into a small shot glass and slides across the table to NED. NED downs it in one and coughs and splutters a little. The other two laugh.

BILL:
Little too hot for ya there, Ned?

TEX:
Maybe he needs another sugar or two, Bill?

NED:
Quit chastising. Just went down the wrong hole is all.

TEX:
Whatever you say Ned.

NED:
Well then I say let's gets started.

BILL produces a cold box, opens it, and starts dealing out sandwiches like playing cards. He then sits down and picks up the sandwiches in front of him.

BILL:
Your turn Tex.

TEX eats a sandwich.

TEX:
Ham.

BILL eats a sandwich.

BILL:
Ham......and cheese.

NED takes a bite out of his sandwich

NED:
Ham, cheese...

He takes another bite.

NED (CONT'D):
And flush of pickle.

BILL throws the rest of his sandwiches aside.

BILL:
Too far for me, 'let you boys duke this one out.

TEX:
I aint yella'.

As TEX goes to pick up another sandwich, a knife falls out from his sleeve, then some bread crumbs.

NED:
Why you cheatin', double crossin'...

TEX:
Now now Ned, let's not be hasty.

NED:
...loaf slicing, slice buttering, no good, jack ass.

TEX:
This is my lunch making shirt. That's all you see here.

NED Tries to tip over the picnic table, but he cannot.

BILL:
Er Ned I think they bolt them to the ground...you know?... on account of thieving'.

NED then tries to pick up the bench to throw at TEX.

BILL:
Erm....Ned, I think it's bolted to the table Ned....on account of it being the same thing.

NED:
Goddamnit! Then I guess we gotta settle this man to man like then, huh Tex?

TEX:
I guess we do Ned.

CUT TO

NED and TEX playing Swingball.

END.

Until the end Scatchyr, it's not obvious why the Cowboys are having a picnic. If it's meant to be an ironically pansy-type activity I think you need to go down a different route. The idea of a bunch of very soft tough guys is old but tried and true. On the other hand cowboys are fertile material so I think you should have another go at this - with something other than a picnic.

Thanks Godot. I wanted to use the the typical card game cheat type scenario in a different setting, rather than soft tough guys, but I guess this isn't coming across well at all. I agree that cowboys are a good area, but this was the first time that I managed to get it from head to paper without stopping because I thought it was crap. And the swingball was not meant to explain the picnic, so again, I seem to have not done a good job.

Will think more on it then.

The typical 'card game cheat' scenario in a picnic setting came across very clearly to me.

If we're in that setting, I think

BILL:
Too far for me . . .

might be better as

BILL:
Too rich for my blood . . .

as that expression is a staple in card games and also applies to food.

Also, the swingball ending requires a scene-shift and there's nothing particularly funny about swingball.

Might it be better if both men suddenly went for their guns (in quick-draw style) and each produced a squeezy condiment dispenser: a red one squirting tomato sauce and a yellow one squirting mustard?

Cheers Ming. That is a better line indeed, so if I stick with the picnic scenario then I may use that one if that's ok?

I do find something funny about swingball though.
