Interview: BBC Controller of Comedy Commissioning
I particularly enjoyed this bit...
I was on maternity leave when Big Top was commissioned
...then you've got Mark Freeland and his exec editor dealing with all of in-house. They all have to develop shows and look after the shows that are on screen. So they're very, very busy. So we really only get scripts from agents and established stars and writers.
So don't bother submitting to BBC Writer's Room then.

And yet if you look at other parts of the Writer's Room (other 'walls', if you like) it seems that they are always looking out for stuff. Maybe they should stick everybody down in the Room and work out what its all about...
I really dislike how the BBC tend to throw all their eggs in one basket with their statements and public updates. When Gavin & Stacey was successful, I read a statement that said 'We want more shows in the style of Gavin & Stacey'.
When Miranda came along and was successful, they said 'We want studio sitcom back where it should be'.
I think this is really short sighted, and some of the people in the important positions actually don't know what to do. Like Chris Rock says, TV execs have usually been promoted from being the best person in the mail room.
