That Proustian rush of memory

Have you ever had a moment that takes you back to the past? Happy, sad, but ultimately lost.

The other day I was looking at YouTube videos of 80s bands like The Eurythmics and Hair Cut 100.

And there I was on the Isle of White. In Ryde Town Hall looking at leaflets for CND.

Which I enjoyed.

But won't again.

Anything similar anyone?

Yes, a few times a year at least, and the best sense for taking you back to your early years as Proust said is definitely smell. A couple of weeks ago I smelt dried out heated in the oven chips, not oven chips, and they took me, very unwelcomely back to school. How the ***k did those dinner ladies make chips so disgusting? Chips are supposed to be nice. They even made custard taste disgusting, those fat old chav bags.

There were some of those dark green paper towels for drying your hands on in a cafe toilet the other day. They smell like primary school!

I love them.

Yumyum. *smells them*

Whenever I hear Dave Edmunds 'Girl Talk' I am instantly returned to the summer of 1978 reading Three Investigator books.

Pink Floyd The Wall... "You yes you laddie, stand still laddie" dam im back in secondary school, we had a bullying head who had exactly the same scots accent and the same life sapping techniques...I very much doubt that any of the band went to my Hertfordshire school.

Did you see the German made/shot-in-South Africa movie of The Three Investigators? It was horrible.

Whenever I hear the words Proustian Rush it's like someone's wearing Proustian Rush by Chanel.

Last one I recall was the time I got into a DeLorean which had been modified by my good friend Doc Brown...

Or "Aaron", as he insists we call him.

No, that's "Uncle Aaron".

No, that's "Uncle Aaron".

I thought his Delorean only went to Orgasmville?

"Next stop, Self Loathing!"

I told you I wasn't driving you to your gig.

It's up north people will nick bits of it.

The secret of skeleton Island. I did Kenneth. I didn't think it too bad for a kids film. The follow-up, The Secret of Terror Castle was an enjoyable romp (although much different than the book from what I remember). The three Investigators are very big in Germany. The advantange of them being a German/SA production is thta they weren't over the top Americanised (smarmy smart arsed kids with a lot of whooping and black slapping etc.).
