So anyone who's not able to produce anything to the same high standards as people who are considered the masters in the genre should just give up?

Seems a little bit mean, so if I can't write a joke that's as good as Steven Wright, Tim Vine, Bob Monkhouse or whoever at their best, I should quit?

Well musical acts should at least aspire to acheive some kind of excellence, surely? Not settle for mediocrity.

But people don't start off excellent at things, they develop and improve over time. Some of Monty Python's stuff was utter garbage but, thankfully, they didn't stop because they weren't writing classic sketches and songs right from the off.

I always go into threads where I see Tony has posted, because he's always right and interesting.

Comedy Forums. Anybody wanting to post should read Tony's. If you think you can match the genius and class of those, carry on. If not, smash your f**king keyboard/face,etc and do some buggering off.

Yes, but sometimes you can tell from the off that some people are, essentially, chancers. We're not talking about some pissy little pub upstairs where somebody's learning their craft. This is a show on BBC2 where, frankly, one expects a little better than somebody just trying stuff out.

You don't generally see the first draft of a sitcom on screen, do you?

But in all seriousness it was a short 5 minute spot on a new chat show, it's not as if she, Carly Smallman, has been given her own show, she's a new act who's been given a break, good luck to her, I hope she can use it as a springboard for greater things.

Too many people seem to get het up about who's doing this and doing that, if you don't like someone then avoid what they do, don't watch them, I don't understand why comedy and comedians seem to provoke such extreme reactions.
