Radio Rejects-writing opportunity Page 13

Really? That's good :) Has it changed since the first post then? (which said 'commissioned')

Well, they're aiming for a certain level of professionalism. In other words a sketch that's pretty much ready to perform, but for whatever reason(s) just didn't get accepted by the show it was originally sent to.

If you think you have something like that, send it. If they don't agree, they just won't use it.

Right. I've dropped the ball on this a few times but time to actually pay attention now.

Given most of my stuff that would qualify for Radio Rejects was written for NewsJack is it ok to send it as it is? Or would it be better to take out the 'Miles Intro' and have it as a standalone sketch?

And what's the view on topical stuff? I'm guessing obscure news-stories from January are probably not worth it but are general themes ok? (e.g. Nick Clegg sold-out - you might get one or two of those)

Basically should I:

( a) choose my favourite three NJ rejects and send them in
(b) tinker with three more generic NJ rejects and send them in
(c) quickly ping of an e-mail to the controller of Radio 4 with three non-topical sketches?

I'd leave as is. Leave the intro too.

I didn't even know you knew where we lived...

I disagree. Just do a quick rewrite - they'll only have to do it if you don't, and they don't have as much time to do it as you do. It isn't Newsjack, so why send a Newsjack sketch with a Miles intro? Send a topical sketch that works without the Newsjack motif, I reckon. And downgrade the topical elements to "zeitgeisty" if you have the choice.

A Miles intro, or in fact any specific reference to Miles, is unique to Newsjack, so yeah, just do a quick rewrite to drop that. Miles isn't performing it for Radio Rejects, so why have him there?

Hmmm. Three different posters, three different answers!

Just to clarify I'd obviously not reference Miles himself in the script but rather NJ has the intro at the start where the news story is set-up (usually with a gag) and then the sketch.

My gut feeling is Zeitgeisty for the first submission.

I left mine as is. They just took the intro off for the recordings.

But happy to stand corrected. I wouldn't worry basically -- if the sketch is good enough, they'll use it.

Dan

The only Newsjack reject I know for definite on the last Radio Rejects was a straight Cameron/Clegg parody with no references to Newsjack/Miles whatsoever

In summary: keep it generic.

when should I send stuff in for the April show?

Sorry, could sketches actually be emailed to my gmail address: lydia.parker27@gmail.com. Just so I can keep things organised!

Thanks,
Lydia

but bear in mind:

If we don't know your work, please just send in your three best sketches

anyone heard if they got stuff in the april show?

Yeah, I've got a sketch in. 'Tezza, the not so bright footballer'. Can't make it to the show though as I am way up in sunny North Yorkshire.

(SPOILER ALERT: don't read if you're going to the show or would rather listen to a recording later on)

Aye, this sketch is in.
