That Mitchell And Webb Look - Series 4 Page 22

The end of Blackadder was funny, only the final few moments were sentimental. And even then spun on the joke about it being more sporting to let the Germans shoot them.

All the Blackadders had weird endings whose mood didn't fit the rest of the show, so it would have been strange if the ending hadn't been odd somehow.

Possibly due to it being deemed necessary to kill of the protagonists at the end of each series.

and the Great War, 1914 to 1917.

Okay!

A dead cat! He died of sadness because of your feelings on the last thirty seconds of one episode of Blackadder! Blood on your hands!

Cats have got better taste...

Trouble is, the jokes Mitchell and Webb spun out from that observation were patchy. The end joke with the dead cast member was good, but the bit where they go slow-mo and scream because they've run out of hot water was cringey.

True; the whole series cried out for a bit more quality control.

Having been critical of the run, I have to say that is still by far the most inventive and entertaining sketch show to have hit the screen in years; a lot of the patchiness comes down to sketches being idea based, rather than simply trotting out the same 'hilarious' characters week after week. That is why we keep watching, because we know the next sketch could, just possibly, be great.

However, you could argue it opened the door to Curtis doing that hideous Africa-starving bit in the Vicar of Dibley when all the cast turned to stare somberly at the camera. God, that was awful.

Don't remember that. Sounds cringeworthy.

I'm not sure how inventive it is. It still seems vaguely indebted to many other sketch shows that have gone before it: Big Train, A Bit of Fry and Laurie, Monty Python. Not to say they don't throw up wonderful sketches, they do, but it's still very traditional in my eyes.

Personally, I prefer Harry and Paul and Armstrong and Miller to this. Although, I can't see either of those shows coming up with the Laboratoire Garnier sketch. And I liked that very much.

Not Blackadder The Third!

Shit me, that episode got a bit dark at the end. Just switched it over for the last 7 minutes. Genuinely brought a tear to my eye.

I liked the Holmes sketch, "I'm a Chinaman! :D

And the end of Remain Indoors was sad.

Yep. Good episode all round I think.

Really enjoyed tonight's. Standout moments were Cat Cat, the Diana conspiracy stuff and the Sorry! exchange. I even found the Holmes sketch quite moving.

Yes, those were quite good. The Battlestar Galactica trio were odd though.

I kind of wish I watched it now. The last two sketches which I saw were very good.

I'd have preferred to end on the Diana sketch personally. I found it funnier.

The Holmes sketch was maudlin...

Well, I think the back third was superior to what came before.

That was a laugh out loud moment.

I laughed out loud at "I'm a Chinaman!" too.

Loved the Sorry! discussion sketch, and the Diana one. Sherlock was more than a little depressing on the whole though, so not the greatest end to the series. Still need to go back and properly watch last week's episode.
