British Comedy Guide

Joyce Grenfell

I just watched this documentary on iPlayer about Grenfell. I have listened to some of her stuff before, but watching this you get to see just how much she gave to the world of comedy, especially to comediennes.

The main interesting that I found out was that while it was St. Trinians that probably made her most famous, she didn't like doing St. Trinians. She was meant to do five films, but quit after three.

She was pretty hot.

Always enjoyed her stuff as a child and weirdly so does my 7 year old, who read a whole book of her stuff at school. I still have her bio and a book of letters sent from her to her mother back in the states during the war to get through. Her comedy is dated but charming, particularly the nursery school monologues which are what first attracted my son to her writing.

Of course, we can all do that monologue now. Whenever I see the Chancellor of the Exchequer the first thing that comes into my head is: "George, don't do that."

or 'Gideon, don't be such a ****'

Yes, I liked her too when I was little. Must be something about her.
Well, she used to be a teacher didn't she?
