The gambling thread Page 4

A cautionary tale:

Not a natural gambler but a few years ago I was lead, via a vision into a hectic spiral over a couple of weeks which cost me about a grand. I was settling down to watch a champions league game on TV when suddenly I had a very clear 'vision' of the score, so strong was the vision that I was convinced it would be correct.

I ummed and ah'd and soon realised I had better place a bet on it, just to calm myself down. By the time I had found the number for William Hill and got my bank card ready, the game had already started! I was going to lay £50 on the score, so strong was the vision, 3-2 to the totally unfancied away team (Bayer Levekusen) at Old Trafford and United had been very hot.

This was before I had the internet and before you could bet after a game had begun. It was vey hard watching that game as one by one the goals came in and it was indeed 3-2 to Leverkusen. That £50 bet would have earned me £1,100 at 22/1. Not only did I not win it, but in 2 weeks lost almost that exact amount by convincing myself I could have another vision when I wanted, how foolish. I have only had two of these visions for sporting events and they were both correct.

I had a dream, the night before the 2005 Champions' League Final between Liverpool and Milan, that Milan were going to win either 2-0 or 2-1 (I forget which), and I put a fiver on it. Obviously, it famously finished 3-3. That's the only time I've ever lost money because of a dream/vision.

The other one I had, I did actually win £350, when I was skint as well. Had a few dreams about scores and winners but none of them came true. These two 'visions' were both just before the start and backed up a very strong impulse to follow it through and place a bet, which is quite against my character. As though I was taken ahold by something.

I keep looking in the window at the bookies and thinking "Yeah, they sound good odds and it really could happen", but it never does. Thankfully, I never put money on. I'm awful at gambling.

I might watch Being ... N-Dubz tonight. That's a gamble.

Every day in the life of Chip is a gamble.

A gamble as to whether one still considers there to be a single redeeming point about humanity by the time the credits roll.

That's no gamble.

Only if you are playing at a casino where you only lose half your stake when zero comes in. Otherwise it's the same average return. Out of every 37 spins on average you will double your money 18 times, and lose 19 times. So out of 37 spins at 1 chip a go you get 36 chips back.

I always forget about the zero, probably another reason I don't like roulette.

That's not a gamble that's suicide.

It's a bit quiet so I think I'll spend 2 quid on 10p roullette.
I'll let you know how I get on.

Ok In this instance I doubled my money & then quit.
But I am in no way condoning gambling.

Five pound just became eight pounds on 50p roulette.
This time I am condoning gambling.

17 black Steve.

Its always 17 black. Put the £8 on it.

I nearly copped for a 125/1 winner last weekend, I had Newcastle to beat Sunderland 5-0. I'm actively looking for Darren Bent.

I had a bet on Carroll being first scorer.
And I've got England for 2-0 or 3-0
Is it my lucky night tonight?
