Yes, there are many conventions one has to follow in comedy, the first principally is to be funny, although many seasoned comedians still manage to get this one wrong, and in sitcomedy this convention has ceased to exist at all.
There are however less obvious conventions, like if you want to be a successful stand up you must have long girly hair and be scruffy and wave your arms about like a drugged idiot.
Then there are the really dark obscure conventions like if you want to be a successful sitcomedian then you must have been or still are a stand up, comedic panel show presenter, gay, jewish or all four of these.
