I was wondering how many comedy conventions take place in the UK and Ireland?
I know there are some conventions for individual shows currently being held or held in the past, such as Dimension Jump (Red Dwarf), TedFest (Father Ted), and Wingin' It (Green Wing).
Also some could argue that the Fringe is a convention, but are there any more general conventions?
Must say I've never heard of any generic comedy conventions. Just, as you say, events for specific shows, On the Buses, etc.
I don't think most comedy fans are quite as militantly geeky as sci-fi/fantasy fans. (Big overlap. Of course.)

I don't know. I probably would personally arm myself if the BBC decided to axe QI.

Indeed. I'm planning to write an article about proposing such an idea, once the article section ever goes up... if ever (sorry Mark).
I myself am going to an anime convention in Middlesbrough this weekend, which will the first convention of any kind I've ever been to. I'm hoping to learn something from it.

That is something I'm planning to propose in such an article. I think it would be best to put the first such convention in January 2012, that way it can coincide with Comedy.co.uk Awards.

There are numerous Carry On events, events at the Dad's Army Collection, and not forgetting the more general TellyNation.

Well for writers theres The Funny Festival organised by the Comedy School and British Society of Comedy Writers both in a few weeks
Yes, there are many conventions one has to follow in comedy, the first principally is to be funny, although many seasoned comedians still manage to get this one wrong, and in sitcomedy this convention has ceased to exist at all.
There are however less obvious conventions, like if you want to be a successful stand up you must have long girly hair and be scruffy and wave your arms about like a drugged idiot.
Then there are the really dark obscure conventions like if you want to be a successful sitcomedian then you must have been or still are a stand up, comedic panel show presenter, gay, jewish or all four of these.
It does help to know these conventions if one wants to get on in comedy. Glad to be of service as ever and good morning.
