Frankie Boyle - an apology on behalf of the Scots Page 8

How can you say this Frankie is hilarious I know he can offend sometimes but they are just jokes come on guys

Is that how you feel about racist jokes as well? Most people who defend comedians telling jokes about the handicapped tend to withdraw their defence, the minute the comedian starts getting racist. It's funny that. I bet Boyle would never dream of making a joke about Jordan's son being black.

I wish to apologise on behalf of the decent people of Scotland. Few Scots are as bitter as Frankie Boyle. Many are more amusing. Some of those are even accountants.

Sorry Frankie let Scotland down :( Scotland Sick

Here Here Mate!!!!!

I totally agree. Don't know much about this "so called" comedian, but what I've heard is not good!! .. although some people rave about him, hmm.

All the best,
Cal

Hmmmm. How can you agree if you're not familiar with the comedian in question, and even acknowledge that he has many enthusiastic fans?

Good point Aaron

or else you'll turn into a frustrated Daily Mail reader

I might be playing devil's advocate (shit stirring) a bit here, but I wonder if the joke would have been as effective/offensive if Harvey was not mixed-race.

He's a big lad for his age, for sure, but does the fact that he's got a bit of black in him make the "potential rapist" angle have more impact than if he was just disabled and white?

Discuss.

No.

No to the discussion?

It was an interesting point about comparing racism to jokes about other forms of prejudice etc, and how only the former is seen as unacceptable. I guess Catskills was possibly suggesting it's all unacceptable, but the comparison could also be used to suggest that jokes about race shouldn't be ruled out automatically.

I remember watching one of those Friday films and Ice Cube I think it was said to another black man 'get your monkey ass over here', which I thought was pretty funny, and you could argue it's almost racist that black guys can get away with stuff like that, but white guys can't.

I mean I don't agree with racism, but as long as they're not attacking black people, or inciting racial hatred, then I think they're kind of entitled to their opinions, and in an ideal world, white people should be able to talk about black people in the same way as black people do, without it being taken the wrong way.

I mean black people can use 'racist' terminology about white people, and I have no problem with that, it's just a shame that in the interests of freedom of speech and fairness, white people can't do the reverse, unless you're satirising a racist, and even then, people will make out you're racist it seems.

It seems like racism in comedy has now come full circle and is now the last taboo to break.

"No" in answer to Kevin's question:

does the fact that he's got a bit of black in him make the "potential rapist" angle have more impact than if he was just disabled and white?

And I agree with the implication that issues of race and use of racially sensitive terminology is perhaps the largest double-standard in modern society and culture. Either the word "nigger" is bad, or - like pretty much any other word on the planet - whether it's good or bad is dependent on its context, not on who says it.

Anyway, that's another discussion that's not for here.

Awww, but Aaron!

No.

If you polled the population, I bet the answer is probably yes.

That suggests that the population acknowledge a racial stereotype that black people are (more likely to be) rapists. I'm not familiar with any such stigma - is it bantered around the pubs of the country?

I suspect he was probably bullied as a child.

I mean, he looks like he was probably a skinny, speccy little git.

I bet he was always getting twatted.

So now he spends his life verbally bullying others.

A bit sad really..

No, that's his stage persona. I've heard from someone who's worked with him that he's actually quite different in person. Very generous, apparently.

I personally like Frankie Boyle, I don't really get offended by jokes.

Is this thread still going? There was a much better one centered around his TV show that also examined the man.

Like all successful comedians he's very funny. His jokes are so good that even the OP could get a laugh using them.
