Newsjack - Series 3 Page 5

Careful on the text speech Aaron's not a fan.

Take a look at this David:

This thread includes some near misses, flops and possibly even some successes from the last series

>I'm writing some vox pops but I've no idea how to format them?

Hate to disagree with sootyj but for formatting the basic rule is - 12pt Arial 1.5 line-spacing.

Dan Tetsell (Newsjack Script editor) gives slightly more rules for sketches on his blog post here but vox pops can just be 12pt Arial (with the standard NAME/EMAIL header).

(I have a 'fancy' template which sets headers, and font styles and so on for scripts which I tend to also use for vox pops, but 12pt Arial is 90% of what you need.)

As for length, they tend to be one/two sentences I think. Have a listen to whats broadcast on the show and type them out if you want to see what they look like. My rule tends to be 'as short as they can be whilst remaining as funny as possible' if you can't make it any shorter it's done. :D

Ignore me I'm wrong about most things.

thank you all for your helpful advice, I love this forum :) and I will try and lose the text speech, but I am addicted to putting lol's into sentences at every available opportunity...lol

lol.

i have yet another question. after you submit something to newsjack, does anyone know how long it is before we find out if they're using something of yours? what's the process

If they don't use anything, they will be silent forever and that's a pretty long wait. However if they do record something you usually get an email on the Wednesday evening. Then if it makes the final edit you hear on Thursday evening, prior to broadcast that night.

cool, big question, is it paid? Laughing out loud

It is paid, but don't expect fortunes (and certainly don't expect it anytime soon). I'd recommend forgetting about the money for now. Focus on getting something on, if that happens you'll get your money about a month or two after the -series- ends. (Yes, it really does take that long.)

I know you're curious about pay and so on, but honestly its easier not to think about it and just to focus on writing something funny.

tbh I didn't even expect it to be paid, just thought I'd ask, and good to know it is. also I would write things for free just so long as my work was being enjoyed :D you're definitely right though, never focus too much on the money, if that was the case I'd become an accountant like my sister. which explains why I'm relying on my student loan whilst she has a steady moderately well paid career lol. not that I'm bitter :D

You're looking at roughly £35 per broadcast minute, rounded up. It's that ball-park, anyway. I've never actually bothered to work it out exactly.

just sent some vox pops off to newsjack. do we get confirmation they've got it like an auto-reply or something? so far I've not had anything

Thus it begins.

I thought I'd get ready for the new series of Newsjack by logging on and joining this forum. A massive disappointment shared is a massive disappointment halved and all that.

And, um, that's about it for now. Basically like the needy kid in school I wanted you all to know I'm here.

Anyway, look forward to following the highs and lows of Series 3.

Check out the News Revue and Treason show threads. You can make some modest money writing for stage shows.
