A cracking writer's tool

Howdi all,

Apologies if I'm in the wrong place.

I tend to use about three different computers when writing something (because I'm LOADED) and I'm crap at keeping track of different drafts and all that.

A free programme, Dropbox (@ www.dropbox.com), gives you 2gig of online storage and works as a folder on your desktop. You can link to it from any computer, you get free online back-up of your work (up to 2 gig, you'd have to pay for more) and you can invite people to collaborate.

I'm not on commission but I do love it so

I use a pen stick to transfer between TWO computers coz I'm not so LOADED. lol

Ah, I jest, I'm more deloaded really

I do that with Google docs - handy if you're writing in several different places.

Google docs is great- I prefer dropbox though as you can work in Word and save it there - Googledocs often messes with the formatting

Nice one Rick was unaware of Dropbox.

I damn well wish I was on commission! It's wicked though.

I thought this Thread was going to be about a dick with a broken bone!
BUT thanks to Rick I got a 'dropbox', instead. Thanks for the 'tip'.

I now exclusively use Outlook Express for my writing. I prefer it to Word because you can have all your folders/files on view in the left hand side window, and save/retrieve/open/close/view much more quickly than Word. However, it doesn't have the (very useful)tools that Word has. You'll have to acquaint yourself with the inbuilt keyboard symbols/foreign alphabet tool (Windows), which you can access by holding down ALT and then using the right hand numbers keypad. You can also reprogramme this facility to include your most-used symbols etc.

When will an enterprising programmer design software that combines the best of both? I know that I'd be a customer.

Another good tool for offline back ups is Skydrive http://explore.live.com/windows-live-skydrive

Apparently that also lets you edit Word documents online, but I've never tried it.

For the record I'm not loaded.

How very odd, I never heard of anyone using an email program for writing documents before.

You will have difficulties if you upgrade to Windows Vista or Windows 7 & because Outlook Express doesn't exist in them, it's been made obsolete.

For scriptwriting try my Toolkit. http://www.datahighways.co.uk/swt/ It gets rid of the clutter of Word leaving just the bits you need.

For general quicker word processing try Wordpad on Windows, Its a simple quick word processor with roughly the same capabilities as the editing part of Outlook Express.
