Another one to throw in the ring, The Private Life Of Sherlock Holmes, superb film.

Really good film, he's such a brilliant character writer. Another I saw recently was Avanti with Jack Lemmon, probably the weakest film I've seen from Wilder, but still solid none the less, and Jack is great in it.

I think my favourite comedy of his is Seven Year Itch. Tom Ewell is brilliant in it. Favourite drama? Sunset Boulevard, no contest.

Agreed.

My Norma Desmond halloween costume of '95 was one of my best.

:D

Apparently Gloria Swanson was (fortunately) a bit more self-aware playing Norma, despite the fact the character's back-story was essentially her own, i.e. movie icon who's star faded with the advent of talkies.

William Holden is also great in it. When I first saw Network though, I simply didn't realise at first that it was the same actor from Sunset Boulevard - it took me several viewings to notice. And I have a big crush on Nancy Olson in that film (still alive, in her 80s now).

That movie is so quotable. I liked William Holden best in my favourite episode ever of I Love Lucy.

Huh? He was in 'I Love Lucy'? Eh?

Yes, when they went to Hollywood. it's the episode where he gets a pie in the face and later she wears a fake nose as a disguise and lights it on fire. And that's the whole thing, in a nutshell.

Agatha Christie adaptations tend to get sniffed at disdainfully, but BW's Witness for the Prosecution is also a lot of fun, mainly thanks to a towering performane from the mighty Charles Laughton.

He had such a varied body of work. He's one of the very best.
