Garth Marenghi's Darkplace Page 3

I seem to remember hearing that it cost a bomb, or something along those lines.

Pity, because it's a big silly show up there with Father Ted and The IT Crowd. And I'm disappointed that it never seems to get repeated.

Heaven knows why they never did another series.

Darkplace is one of my all-time favourite comedies. Amazingly good.

Sadly, the show really didn't do very well at all in the ratings (shifted around the schedule in a late night slot). Additionally, as said above, it cost an absolute packet to make (one of the most expensive sitcoms of the decade apparently, although I must admit I'm not sure how/why it cost so much)... so Channel 4 couldn't really justify another series (so instead they commissioned Man To Man With Dean Learner... which ended up as a disappointment).

Did you see how many extras they had in some episodes?

It kicked ass though.

Man to Man with Dean Lerner is not quite as good but still worth a squint.

Looks like the brilliant Matthew Holness finally has something new cooking:

What about Bob?

That site is delicious looking.

I love the Reprisalizer already! The short film Matthew Holness made was on Film Four last night. Unfortunatelty it was on at about 1:30 in the morning! A little bit past my bed time. Any one know where I can see 'A Gun for George'?

Fans of Darkplace will probably enjoy the Australian series 'Danger 5'.

I've just tried to start watching this but I don't seem to get it (or more to the point, I don't know what there is to get). I mean, I understand it is trying to take the piss but once that is dealt with there isn't much substance. Watched 2 episodes and I want to like it but I don't think I'll be watching any more.

10 years old! And there was me thinking there was still a chance that the 44 'lost' episodes might still be shown at some point!

Matthew Holness's short film 'A Gun For George' is on the FilmFour website:

I think it's great. A distant cousin to Darkplace maybe. Can't wait for the full feature length version 'The Reprisalizer'.

This sounds very interesting. Must check this one out soon. Only one series...? Doesn't sound like mainstream anyway.

Darkplace was incredible. Was it axed or was there just nowhere else to go with it? I know there was Man To Man With Dean Learner but that was pretty horrid and felt like a misjudged attempt at recreating Darkplace's charm.

Pretty sure the channel didn't want any more. I think. It had proven to be pretty expensive to produce, and it didn't pull in big numbers, so off it went. Unfortunately. I always liked the idea that, for the second series, Garth would have retooled the show, so now it was set in the future, in a hospital on the Moon; or some other such nonsense.

A hospital that got blasted into space in a nuclear explosion!

Every time I rewatch this I spot some extra joke I don't remember noticing before. It's really incredibly precisely made/written/acted, and dense with comedy.
