John Tomkins: a Creative Journey

John Tomkins is a banker and part-time musician from Devon who dreams of being an internationally-acclaimed movie director. After writing, directing and scoring his first short film in 2008, he quickly set about bringing his next project to vivid life; a full-length action/adventure feature film called Like An Angel.

Concieved as a tribute to its leading lady (actress, singer and performance artist Kirsty Anne Symonds) this swashbuckling, time-travelling opus would take the best part of a year for John to self-finance and shoot.

Against mounting odds, Like An Angel slowly came to fruition under the gaze of an ever-present film crew, who devoutly captured the trials (both trivial and tragic) and the artistic courage of one man in deep transition.

Armed with a handheld camera and an unwavering self-belief, John Tomkins ploughs a singular and unforgettable path to some kind of stardom in this frequently-outrageous new documentary by Darren Jones.

How do you know, or how did you become aware of John Tomkins?

John is something of a local legend. Torbay is a pretty culturally-bereft place and so, characters like John stick out. Look out for John (and his creative partner Kirsty Anne Symonds) on the upcoming series of Britain's Got Talent. We are looking to do a first screening of the documentary in the next few months, so, if you're interested, I'll keep you posted.

You can see/hear more of him at his myspace page:-

And likewise, with Kirsty, here

My curiosity is piqued. Now what happens?
