Short Sketch

Announcer: And now on CBBC, can the warriors succeed in their quest to become the Ultimate Warrior? Its Raven, and as its wheel-chair season, stay tuned for Dancing on Wheels next. What a piss take.

*Intro Music plays*

Raven (thick scottish accent): Hello and welcome to Raven, the gameshow where children compete against eachother to become the ultimate warrior by collecting treasure rings. Today's contestants consist of children who are wheelchair-bound, already showing great signs of courage which is essential for a warrior.

Mikey: Hello, Im Mikey, and I want to become a warrior.

Raven: *laughs uncontrollably* - Excuse me. Right the first challenge is Stepping Stone Gorge. The player must make his way from one side of the gorge to the other. Sounds simple?

Mikey: But I -

Raven: But hold on. There is of course a twist. The warrior must collect the gold ring which is on middle stone, and store it safely in his bag. And if you are to fall. You must wade through the fast flowing river to reach your destination. Ok, so if you are ready, let the challenge begin. Jump!

Mikey: I..I.. -

*there is a silence*

Raven: Show courage! Use your legs!

Mikey: But I -

Raven: Okay I'm afraid that's time up. No rings collected. You have not made it through to become a warrior.

Mikey: But I can't -

Raven: Wheel him off.

BUMP

Honestly?

Didn't get it. If the joke is just that the kid is in a wheel chair and meant to be doing active stuff then it's a bit shallow. Needs more depth.

Sorry - just not funny for me on any level I'm afraid. I think if you are going to cover a taboo subject you have to have a really good joke behind it or a big surprise for the viewer at the end. If we hadn't known he was in a wheelchair until the very end, it could have had a very funny ending. I know it's an old joke but along these lines,
'Mummy can we go to the beach this weekend?
Don't be silly darling you know we can't get your iron lung into the Volkswagon.

Ok thanks I will try to re edit it Geek

There's nothing wrong with doing jokes on a taboo subject like kids in wheelchairs, although as said this seemed to lack depth and the joke was pretty much in the first few lines.

Some sort of random accident in the studio which means the kid gets the ring may work???

I thought that in this day of dopey celebs (Peaches Geldof springs to mind) fronting shows there may be some legs with the Presenter character in the sketch continuing to depend on a script that is evidently inappropriate or irrelevant.

However this dogged trait would be based on his or her own stupidity/lack of initiative etc rather than through aiming to be intentionally cruel or thoughtless.
