Things that piss you off Page 982

Presumably empathic reactions are a result of learning to read facial expression; inter-acting online would fail to develop those parts of the brain. It follows that the lack of negative emotional feedback from objectifying and aggressive behaviour online has the potential to seed an increase in sociopathic behaviour among young users that could spill into real life and linger into adulthood.

New technology is a mind altering substance and should carry parental warnings.

The research usually indicates its not genderthat's the issue, its stability.

Albeit having no strong male figure any where in a childs life can be quite negative.

But its the chaos of families where kids are moved from pillar to post that are the ones that are problematic.

As for role models my suggestion is that boys (who largely grow into men) who only have their mothers as a role model in their early years and only become 'aware' of females with the onset of puberty and an interest in sex then their overall view of women will be largely of a sexual nature. Particularly the disassociation of these new feelings with their mother (obviously, I know) may also disassociate any other positive attributes of that mother... ' she's not a woman she's my mother' so to speak.

I'm ignoring the first part, because I wasn't questioning that.

I would love to see anything related to this study-wise. Or is it just a theory you've adopted? I imagine it's a pretty rare case that a child is brought up only knowing their mother and no other women. I'm sure that the average child at least grows up knowing one aunty, sister, cousin, family friends. I think any sort of developmental disorder would be more to do with their lack of socialism than anything else- as in not understanding normal social interactions including those involving woemen. I think someone in that situation will be pretty f**ked up generally.

Rwayne doesn't speak for anyone else Nat so that last bit was a tad mean.

Which bit? I haven't been trying to be mean. Can you help me out please and I'll apologise and amend as necessary.

The last thing I said in that post is that a child who grew up without being socialised would be f**ked up. Have I missed something and am coming across as unsympathetic? Never my intention and apologies to anyone who I've offended.

I do find that interesting, and genuinely, I do not mean this pejoritavely but why would you love to see anything releted study wise? would that make it more or less likely to be true? Why do people need to be told by someone else what to think? and I don't mean you but generally.

Anyway, is that social interaction that's missing and really my point is that's not improved by being glued to a screen in fantasy land.

Scientific method requires the testing of hypothesis. Having said that scientific method works rather better in some disciplines than others.

Oh no, it's just for me. I'm a big reader upper on subjects as a general rule. I just wanted to know if this was soemthing that existed in the net-o-sphere or whether it was personal opinion. I never meant to denegrate your point by implying that it wasn't backed up. I genuinely do have an interest!

This I totally agree with. Sitting a kid in from of Modern Warfare will never take the place of actually raising them.

Don't worry...it's not aimed at you it's aimed at me.

It was a tad of a joke as Rwayne said you should only speak for yourself and I was assuming he was applying the same methodology, as I sure he does.

Marc is being wickedly subtle, as is his wont.

Aw sorry, I'm a bit slow on the uptake today!

I'd rather my future children stayed in playing World Of Warcraft for hours on end instead of snorting the latest designer amphetamine in a club at 4am.

What if ones introvert and the other is Peter Stringfellow??

I believe ice cream diners are the way forward..or backward....seriously.
Kids have it hard with all the shit they are bombarded with and expected to like and expected to take e.t.c, the makers of these 'violent games' are the ones who should be targeted by anyone wanting change, though in the original post I'm not sure exactly what the journo is specifically after ( haven't read it all so not going to jump to conclusions) but one thing I find odd is why she is focusing on the 'fantasy' gaming industry...if you look in a beehive you are likely to see bees.
Is it not just a hot vehicle on which to climb to promote an agenda, no matter how credible the beliefs behind it...breeding divisions is an old, tired and frankly distasteful way to go about it.

It's ok Nat it's all this Flaming June heat! :)

I don't do subtlety on the internet. With me it's frankness and sledgehammers or nothing!

Video games are just the latest scapegoats for societies ills - jazz music, heavy metal, Teddy Boys, comic books, video nasties, etc. - they're all really convenient and easily labelled products that the moral minority can tackle.

And to be honest, I'd rather my future children stayed in playing World Of Warcraft for hours on end instead of snorting the latest designer amphetamine in a club at 4am.

Word. Except I'd get them onto better games than WoW. Blizzard can do one.
