He was making it a bit more English. Oh I say!

Blasphemy!!!

A very clever woman who makes videos on YouTube about sexism in pop culture has been fundraising to make a series of videos about sexism in video games, and gamer forums have started harrassing her big time:

She hasn't even made the videos yet and they are vandalising her wiki page (replacing her photo with porn and calling her a c**t), sending her thousands of emails wishing rape and death on her and flooding her YouTube channel with similar hateful messages.

Anyone who thinks that feminism is unnecessary and that women should stop complaining should take a look at those links, because for many women that is everyday life.

Some people's mothers need to do some serious beating.

Though in support of some of the commentors, I'm also not entirely sure why shy needs several thousand dollars to make YouTube videos. Kind of feel likes like it is playing on a hot button topic to raise funds that aren't really necessary.

In all fairness the comments weren't much ruder than most YouTube clips get (speaking from personal experience here....). And hacking wiki pages is a rather silly internet prank.

I'm not sure she is getting especially picked on. And the hefty funding for a little video seems a bit much.

But I guess the main point is it illustrates how poor netiquette is getting. YouTube is an absolute swamp and it is attrocious in how it responds to flaming and trolling.

I do worry as I've said numerous times before. The internet encourages no consequences communication, without even having to look some one in the eye or hear their voice. And this seems to short circuit a lot of normal behaviour restrictions.

In regards to the fundraiser, her videos are more than 10 minutes long and she does a great deal of academic research for them. Other YouTubers are funded by a cut of the ad revenue that their videos generate, but she chooses not to have ads because she feels it would be hypocritical if the ads placed by her videos were sexist as she can't screen them. She also uses a professional filming studio which must be paid for. $6000 for a solid hour of content + time spent researching + expenses - doesn't seem that outrageous if you consider how much a freelance journalist might make for the same amount of work.

And while the comments may be standard fare for YouTube, when it becomes a concerted attack rather than a couple of idiots it must be very distressing.

Anyone who thinks that 'women should stop complaining' are hardly likely to watch it though are they?... and if they did they'd just see it as a woman complaining.

I don't think feminism is unnecessary, but I do think tackling a topic that has been done a thousand times before by more qualified female journalists who actually work in the video games industry is a complete waste of time.

Playing the 'defenceless female' card to raise money because of the 'nasty boys' out there is also pretty low and self defeating.

It didn't help that one of the first sentiments she made on her intro video used the word 'misogyny'. To your average male gamer, soon as some chick brings out the 'M' word, then they're immediately going to think that it's yet another one sided, man hating, hatchet job that seeks to do no more then portray them in a bad light.

She knew exactly what kind of reaction her words would bring and played on this to squeeze cash out of her fellow sisters - woo, way to go girlie!

Of all of the evils in this world that she could tackle - female circumcison, sex trafficking, Disney Princesses - she chose 'why do women in video games have big tits?'.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go on a Twilight forum and whine about how the male characters are nothing more then twisted female stereotypes. When I get the expected backlash from teenage girls, I'll go on the Internet and complain until someone gives me money.

It is alot, especially if you take into account she's working to her own brief.

Two things

Feminism is still extremely relevant

Youtube comments are nothing. Get on 4chan or something and see people who show their disagreement with scat porn and beheadings and things you can't unsee. Learning to detach and not take it personally is really important.

If they are massively, unbelievably succesful.

Of course. And that like I say is an example of the worrying growth of untempered, violent opinion available on the internet. Which has tendency to over flow into the real world.

But I'd say it's more about her messing with peoples idea of fun, then her views on gender politics.

Nice strawman argument there.

You really make this place unbearable. You realise that always going out of your way to aggravate people is sociopathic, right?

On this I completely agree.

Her case is alot closer to the Invisible Children debacle. A lone voice pursuing its own agenda for its own purpose.

That said the desensitysing effect of increasingly realistic video games is no joke.

Just better handled by better journalists who don't rely on a tin cup to raise funds.

Are you of the opinion that anyone who disagrees with you is sociopathic? That's a mighty strange way to view the world.

May I suggest having a more open mind and listening to both sides of an argument and not demanding that your viewpoint is the only one that matters.

Additionally, when debating a topic with someone, the correct netiquette would be to attack their argument and not the poster personally.

Thank you.

To be honest I don't really see the point of this 'study' or what it hopes to achieve.

I'm sure people aren't 'made' sexist by how a video game looks, people bring the attitudes they already have to it.

A bigger concern might be why a generation of, I assume, mainly young people are pissing their lives away obsessively playing fantasy video games.
