:D Forgot that one!

There's a great chippy in Cwmcarn. Great chips. Turn right at Wales.

There's nearly a great one in North London (can't remember where, exactly- within 2 miles of Kingsbury?).. it's a Jewish family establishment and you can have your fish fried in batter made from matzo meal.. very nice.. it often has queues that go down the street.

Two Brothers in Finchley?

Incidently has/had a very good Chinese take-away opposite (well it did in the 90s).

No, not at all. I'm saying that the bad ones are run by chinese people who (try to) learn their cooking on the fly over here, who are not from a professional background. They haven't got a clue what they should be doing, so they make it up as they go along.

Where I live now (UK south coast urban) is full of such places.. and my nearest "good" one is 10 miles away, which is too far from me for home delivery.

What da hell.. I still got Pot Noodle to fall back on..

If you go to China, you might find that a lot of their dishes do not match the standard Western notion of what Chinese food should be. Little conical shells cooked in burning chili paste (too hot), deep fried eel (delicious), turtle soup (not for animal lovers), catfish soup (delicious if done well), chicken foot and head soup (no thanks), rice with fried gizzards and offal (no thanks), steamed pork dumplings (superb), etc. Suggest you avoid Pot Noodle and instead eat fresh fruit and vegetables.

When I was a sixth form student I was friendly with a chinese lad and I was invited to his New Years Party. The food was cooked by himself and his friends (all Chinese) and was absolutely delicious. The soup was so spicy it actually made my eyes water. There front room was full almost to the ceiling with beer! One of the best parties I've ever been to.

Stop putting it in your eyes then.

Kenneth? You should have been there the other night. It was truly horrendous.

I am fortunate to be surrounded by some excellent restaurants, all within short walking distance. The only minor hassle was learning to order in Mandarin. A huge meal and large bottle of beer costs the equivalent of 3 quid.

Aye, I dreaded my first Chinese-only party, only to discover that all the men were constantly toasting one another with beer, vodka and cognac and draining their glasses each time. As a former alcoholic, I had little difficulty in assimilating.

Are there many Korean restaurants in the UK? I avoid Chinese food for the most part but I love most Korean dishes that don't contain seafood.

Depends on where you are.

Golders Green nearish me seems to have a little Korea town.

Howzabout Mexican restaurants? I love living where there's a taco place on nearly every corner; I guess it's our version of kebab shops.

New Malden near me has a huge Korean population and loadsof Korean restaurants.

From Wikipedia:
"New Malden has the largest expatriate community of South Koreans in Europe, and is one of the most densely populated area of Koreans outside South Korea."

Its a shame New Malden is otherwise a shithole.

I'll take a plate of bulgogi and some chapchae, please.

they were both in Germany

You can always find good Korean food in a city with an American military base because thousands of troops marry Korean women during their tours and then their wives open restaurants back in the States.

..and while we're at it, the best spare ribs I ever had, by a country mile (apart from my own) were in Ibiza. Brilliant.. but that was 1982.

I've never had better ribs and brisket than they serve at the famous BBQ mecca that is City Market in Luling, Texas.

I've always been a sucker for Bimibab and Kimchee.

As for mexican. Lots of really awful Texmex knock offs and some very expensive authentic restuarants.

But now getting lots of burrito bars and Wahacca an authentic not to expensive chain is starting to spread.

but most of these places don't make their own tacos so I suspect you'd see them as a bit suspect.

A few Brazillian restaurants where they do the meat on swords thingy which is nice.

So quid quo pro hows your home town set up for chippies and pasty shops?

The ingredients for fresh tortillas and taco/burrito contents should be readily available in the UK.

There was a single fish & chips place here in this city of 2.5 million but it closed down after a year. Some restaurants serve f&c but not as a takeaway order. Pasties are unheard of unless you are at a place that bills itself as an Irish or British pub. The ones at the place closest to me are good and I've heard the same about their fish & chips. I hate seafood, so I'll never know good from bad.

Sad,sad bastards that buy and wear perfumes (yes , perfumes)flogged by prats like David Beckham and men of his ilk

seriously

get a f**king life
