Apparently it was caused by an improperly cleaned mini bar on the plane.

Not a catastrophic failure of the engine and every navigational aid at 10,000' then?

Bugger.

One of my absolutely infuriating pet hates is modern films/tv shows shot in black and white. Nobody working on these things seems to be aware that you have to light black and white footage differently from colour footage to make it look good. Modern black and white films look like shit - they look bland, flat, washed out and fuzzy. It's like fingernails down a blackboard for me. Gah!

I watched this terrible one, it was just couldn't see a thing and then it was silent.

Then I realised the telly was turned off.

Also, something I'd like them to know is that using black and white does not actually make a film more important, it remains just as ordinary as it ever was, just with fewer colours.

Isn't that a BNP film review?

Laughing out loud

The fact that whatever terrible event happens in the world, the media's first thought is how many Brits were killed never mind the dozens of other poor f**kers.

That is so annoying.

I don't know, most of the recent black and white ones I can think of looked fine to me. Good Night, And Good Luck. The Man Who Wasn't There. Ed wood. La Haine. Pleasantville. Control... they all looked good and they all had good reason for being made in black and white.

I like black& white - as long as it's shot on black& white stock, not decolourized.
Good Night and Good Luck was particularly gorgeous.

The trouble is, studios are shit-scared off black & white, so as a compromise films get shot in colour then graded to B&W - which aint so hot.

Give me some examples to work with.

Actually, Goodnight and Good Luck was the first time I noticed terrible lighting in modern black and white films. The Courage adverts from the 80s were shot in black and white and the lighting was done by someone who used to work on black and white films, and the guys making the advert were shocked at the mess he seemed to have made of the lighting until they saw it on film.

Compare the Courage ads to Goodnight and Good Luck and the latter just looks like crap - looks like a colour movie on a black and white TV, not a black and white movie.

We'll have to agree to disagree on Good Night, And Good Luck. I think it looks fantastic and perfectly reflects the type of claustrophobic chamber piece it is.

Generally on the black and white question, it's predominantly done by extremerey talented filmmakers I trust entirely. David Lynch, Darren Aronofsky, the Coen Brothers, Woody Allen, Frank Darabont etc. That's why I believe most of the modern black and white films work so well.
