Benny Hill

Well, it was Frankie yesterday, but today's the 15th anniversary of the (estimated) tragic death of the great Benny Hill.

Hill's health began to decline in the early 1990s. Weighing 238 lbs (108 kg) at 5 feet 10½ inches (1 m 79 cm) tall, he suffered heart problems related to his obesity. On February 11th, 1992, doctors told him that he needed to lose 28 pounds, and recommended a heart bypass. He declined, and was diagnosed a week later with renal failure.

Benny Hill died on or about April 20th, 1992 (Easter weekend), alone in his flat at 7 Fairwater House, Twickenham Road, Teddington, at the age of 68. On 24 April, concerned neighbours had called the police, who then found the deceased Hill sitting in his armchair in front of the television. On the day that Benny Hill died, a new contract arrived in the post to him from Central Independent Television.

The cause of death was listed as coronary thrombosis. (His death closely coincided with that of another British comedy icon, Frankie Howerd, who died on April 19th aged 75.)

He was buried at Hollybrook Cemetery near his birthplace in Southampton. In October 1992, following rumours that he was buried with large amounts of gold jewellery, an attempt was made by thieves to exhume his body. However, when authorities looked into his open coffin the following morning, there was no treasure within it, and consequently, only the culprits know for sure whether anything valuable was inside. Hill was re-buried with a new coffin lid and a solid slab placed across the top of the grave.

Such a horrible death and undignified burial for such a well-loved and successful comedy star. :(

I blame Ben Elton. The smug bastard.

There's an excellent biography about Benny Hill 'Funny, Peculiar' by Mark Lewisohn. Over 500 pages but a thumping good read.

Might have to get myself a copy when I'm a bit less busy and actually have time to read, then! Thanks! :)

The power of smug bastards is frightening.

I Love Benny Hill. He was a bugger, yet totaly loveable. I wish he was still around. He could chase me wherever he wanted. Benny is (old skool). There will never be another allowed like him. I dont adore him like i do Ronnie Barker yet he is stil one of my top 10. Da der der der der da der der der der da da der.

I say let's have Charley as an honorary 'Hills Angel'.

Does that mean she'll be getting her baps [almost] out on a semi-regular basis? :/

Did anyone spot the end of Have I Got News For You last night after the credits had rolled? Adrian Chiles did a great Benny Hill impersonation

Wasn't paying much attention (I'll be watching the extended version tonight), but yeah, t'was very good. :)

Who gives a toss? Benny Hill was the most overrated, overpaid and undertalented comic ever. Half-naked women running around, him speeded-up on a motorbike, one-liners straight out of joke books for the under-fives. Are people sorry he's gone? Well that IS funny.

What you forget is at the time it was funny. Nobody knew about political correctness and we accepted it for what it was. You also sensed really that he wasn't that confident or happy.

I don't think he's at all funny, but it's fair enough if people miss him.

I will however start to seriously worry if anyone ever starts a Bernard Manning thread.

Benny Hill - the man was no Ben Elton.

That's probably the best thing you could say about him.
