In Court. Page 2

Trust me Mannikin, I'll never slip in Uranus.

I love this whole concept and agree there is more scope.

I agree. Shame the defendant isn't a Gemini. E.G.

BARRISTER:
And would you agree that the victim was a Gemini?

DEFENDANT:
(RUBS CHIN THOUGHTFULLY) Well, I'm in two minds about that...

Great idea. As a visual ending you could maybe have the judge pass sentence using the Libra Scales of Justice weighed down on one side.

:O

Ooh you are a naughty little sausage. ;)

Really like the revised version, one minor technical point, Pisces - 15th March not July, you've probably already noticed ...I'm not Russell Grant.

This is a great idea for a sketch. I think you nearly have it perfected. I liked Nigels idea of the scales. I think that would be a good visual ending. Maybe you could work something in involving what their horoscope was for the day the incident happened.

You could even have something blatant like the judge saying:

'You maintain that you are innocent of all charges but when we read your star sign for that day it is as follows: 'You will meet an old friend on a vertical journey. Your nature as a gemini is to be an extrovert and show off and you will want to show him your new umbrella. You will open it indoors killing him in the process'.....

Like the idea and the revised punch, but feel you could have a bit more fun with the astrology - the sketch feels a bit abrupt at the moment.

This is the sketch.

No changes to your original piece except the removal of one line.

INT. A COURTROOM.

BARRISTER:
Could you please clarify for the court that you were born on the fifteenth of July, nineteen eighty six?

DEFENDANT:
That is correct.

BARRISTER:
That would make you a Cancerian would it not?

DEFENDANT:
I believe so yes.

BARRISTER:
And would you agree that the victim was a Gemini?

DEFENDANT:
I suppose so.

BARRISTER:
I put it to you that you murdered the victim because your star signs are incompatible. As a Cancerian you found the victim to be aloof and emotionally vague whereas you prefer the sanctuary of commitment.

DEFENDANT'S LAWYER:
Objection

JUDGE:
Over ruled.

BARRISTER.
Typical Leo.

END.

The murder stuff is literal, obvious, depressing and unnecessary. It's far funnier that the man is in a crown court being tried for some unknown crime related to astrology.

Obviously Sooty is right about the typical Leo line, but it does work and thewriting is excellent. I think it's a great piece of work. My advice is try not to be too literal and dot every 'i'.

Thanks all for the very useful responses. I have tried elaborating on the points made in this re-write. The Gemini idea seemed popular but it was something I had tried and did not like before I posted the original so I haven't revisited it this time around. Anyways, for those who's interest can make it, updated version below: :)

INT. A COURTROOM.

BARRISTER:
Could you please clarify for the court that you were born on the fifteenth of March, nineteen eighty six and that would make you a Pisces would it not?

DEFENDANT:
That is correct.

BARRISTER:
And would you agree that the victim was a Leo?

DEFENDANT:
I suppose so.

BARRISTER:
Would it be fair to say that as a Leo, the victim was generous and warmhearted?

DEFENDANT:
He had his moments.

BARRISTER:
Yet you have told the court that he could be Patronising, Dogmatic and intolerant.

DEFENDANT:
My submissive nature offers no threat or challenge to stronger and more exuberant characters. I accept the people around me and the circumstances in which I find myself.

BARRISTER:
May I repeat for the record, the sworn statement of our expert astrologer who gave his testimony only yesterday. The Piscean longs for recognition as a creative force and have an instinctive dislike for discipline and and confinement.

DEFENDANT:
Maybe I do but I also possess a gentle and patient nature. I am friendly, good natured, and compassionate and it's those qualities that allow me to respond with sympathy and tact to any suffering I encounter.

BARRISTER:
Be that as it may you cannot refute the sign of Pisces. Two fish swimming in opposite directions, pointing to inner tension and it's that tension that drove you to commit the actions for which you are being tried today. No further questions.

THE BARRISTER RETURNS TO HIS BENCH. THE JUDGE TURNS TO THE DEFENDANT

JUDGE:
Before I ask the jury to come to a decision is there anything the defendant would like to add?

DEFENDANT:
I would like to enter a plea of diminished responsibility on the grounds that on the day in question my twelfth house was in the ascendancy of Venus in Taurus.

END.
