General Election 2010 Page 74

Ha no, one is enough!

Chip's just taken part in a phone survey for an opinion poll that comes out next week.

I had a rather disconsolate Labour canvasser on the doorstep this morning:

"No, I am afraid you won't be getting my vote."

"Yours or anybody else's."

Aw!

What was the poll about, chip?

Or do it again with entirely new parties. A report way back in 2006 showed Britain is less happy than in the 1950s - despite the fact that we are three times richer.

So why isn't this a 'big issue'?

"What the happiness research suggests is that once average incomes reach about £10,000 a year, extra money does not make a country any happier. "

I don't see any major party dealing with this at all. Surely we'd all like to be happier? Isn't that what life's all about?

But things like happiness and joy don't make money, and we seem to be lead by power-mad obsessives who've had all the joy sucked out of them.

All very true, though of course the answer is in some ways in our own hands. I know an increasing number of people who are deciding they would sooner live on less and spend their lives in more fulfilling ways.

But you are right, our politicians with their obsession with growth are soulless purveyors of misery.

The big nettle to grasp is equality. People only start to think of themselves as poor and disadvantaged when they see what othes have, and of course there is always someone who has more. And so people are made to feel worthless.

Well this is a high-ranking comedy forum, comedy makes people about as happy as anything can, so who here will take up this noble cause?

Yes comedy writers are the most well-adjusted, generous spirited, unmaterialistic of people, laughing good-naturedly at every setback, always delighted by one anothers' success and wishing no more reward than to make people laugh.

If there was an election today, how would I vote.
Who I thought would make a could prime minister.
And if I'd seen the leadership debates and if they'd influenced me.
It was for The Daily Telegraph.

Ooooh, a posh one.

I always wanted to meet someone who been one of a hundred people asked a question for Family Fortunes.

Bless them. They're heading for electoral anihilation at this rate.

You really aren't following the polls are you?

I have not seen any which have been published today, but yes I am.

Okay then, has there been any poll in the last three weeks which would not result in a hung parliament? Have there been several that would put Labour as the largest party in a hung parliament? And does that equate to annihilation?

As your politicians and spin doctors are so fond of trotting out, Badge, "The only poll that matters is on May the 6th".

The points are hovering around the 30-40 mark for all parties. Some have had Conservative majorities, many have had hung Parliaments. Probably some have shown Labour majorities. But take those polls alongside other evidence - such as anecdotes like Timbo gave above, apparent prevailing public sentiment, professional political analysis - and also contrast with Labour's massive majority in the House over the past 13 years, and a very unpleasant picture is painted for yourselves.

Don't try to put that gloss on the situation - it's embarrassing to watch.

I agree with you in the main, surprisingly. The only poll is 6th May. All I'm saying is that the evidence isn't there to suggest total annihilation, and there are an awful lot of imponderables. I'm not trying to put a gloss on anything.

By the way, why are you saying "your politicians and spin doctors" and this "unpleasant picture... painted for yourselves"? I don't even know who I'm voting for yet, so I'd be very surprised if you do!

My apologies then; you just seemed a little too defensive of the Labour position, too close to the ... well, delusion, that I see from Labour activists.

Ok, perhaps 'total' anihilation is overstating it a little, but at least comparatively, the Labour Party is not looking to be in a good place at all.

I know one thing. Whoever does win, when they are just starting the most important job they will ever have, they're going to be bloody knackard. All this running about all over the country, the poor buggers will need a month off to rest.
