General Election 2010 Page 134

A little shot of Tennessee Williams is a lovely way to start the day, but I am wondering if you've started a bit early like Ives and Newman in the clip. Or have I missed something?

As we've already veered off topic, I think COAHTR has my favourite line of his - 'Oh you no-neck monster, you've spilled a warm butter biscuit on my new frock!'

Floating voters are just self interested people who don't know much about politics. They lurch off in whatever direction they hear the sound of a slice of bread being buttered like the electoral undead.

Still better than blindly voting for whoever your dad did.

And better than voting for the same party you always have done. For example, anyone who is strongly left-leaning, should now consider the Greens. But hey, they'll never be in the cabinet, will they? Same with the Liberals.

Yeah, that annoys the piss out of me too.

What exactly is a "wasted vote" anyway? Should anybody who voted Labour this time around consider their vote "wasted"?

I think that there are no wasted votes, but that all voting is tactical. You choose whatever voting strategy you think is best.

Well if we EVER get a true PR system in, then in principle at least, no votes at all will be wasted, as all parties with votes will get proportional power in the balanced govt.

When I first saw the Cat on a Hot Tin Roof movie I really struggled to understand why Paul Newman kept refusing to sleep with Liz Taylor. Especially in that slip. It was only years later that I found out he was supposed to be gay and the Hollywood version glossed this. :O

Unless your dad was also a floating voter.

If the Lib Dems really wanted to act in the national interest they would have gone along with a Tory minority government by agreeing to support (or abstaining on) confidence votes. What we have here is no more stable than the minority government that was the moral outcome of the election (if there was one). The best result for stability would have been to give a minority government a fair run and then have another election in a short while, at which we would be more likely to get a majority government with a genuine parliamentary mandate.

And whats more binding yourself to collective responsibilty doesn't put you in a more powerful position than negotiating with a minority government. Clegg and friends have been a bit too desperate for the trappings of office and have trapped themselves in a coalition they can't get out of.

From a philisophical standpoint we are all self interested beings and everything that we make happen is out of self interest. I assume Mr Taxis is referring more to selfishness, self involvement, insularity, excessive individuality, greed, rather than being community spirited? Many are like this, as Thatcher and Regan both realised to their benefit.

I take it that this 'big society' vision that got totally lost in the election campaign was Cameron's attempt to settle people's fears that a new Conservative Govt would not be a return to Thatcherism's most damaging aspects??? To that extent I think having the Libdems on board can only help their image and maybe even check against the kind of policies that favour corporations over communities and individuals over society. These Tories do need to be watched closely.

Individuals should be favoured over society.

What, like burglars? Rapists?

Cameron has been saying he wants his ministers to stay on for longer, and not be keep changing as has been happening. He says they have to do better. What if they don't do better? Will he still not move a failing minister? Or has he got a magic bag full of perfect people?

And why shouldn't they be promoted if they have done really well in their position:
Deputy PM Clegg for example has hit the ground running and he and his two allocated civil servants have counted more that half of the Paper clips in Whitehall.

No that was the right clip. Mendacity. Goes on longer mind than that snippet. It's a great play/film!

I note with amusement that JohnnyD hasn't reared his head again.
