I don't know why I bother as my sense of humour is so vastly different to the style of Newsjack.
The advice that often gets offered is to write what you yourself find funny. Yet clearly work has to be tailored to a greater or lesser degree to the people who might want it, and the experience from people on this very thread shows that Newsjack might well take stuff you didn't actually think much of yourself. So what use is it to amuse yourself?
I quite like the show. It's very funny in places and I think suits my sense of humour.
That said, hard to write this week as there was basically no news! I try not to write anything 'funny' if there's a death involved (though that was tested to the limit with a sketch this week!) so that cut out many of the stories that weren't 'SNOW!'
Dan
At my workshop they definitely said they'd rather have 2 good sketches and that you spent more time polishing them, rather than aiming to send the max weekly quota of 3 regardless. That said, I suppose there may be times when you think something is well written using a sense of humour that is not your usual one, but that would appeal to all/section of the R4 audience.
Vox pops, one-liners have been more difficult to judge in every show I've ever written for, but the same broad principle applies
Hello. Another newbie lured here by the promise of hot Newsjack action.
Just to bring you up to speed.....
Week 1: Wrote a sketch but missed the deadline by 5 minutes. One of the sketches on the show was a bit similar to mine which has convinced me that my rather obvious idea was stolen by some form of telekinesis.
Week 2: Submitted the grand total of one 'voxpop'.
(It's a marathon not a sprint, etc)
Good luck to all for this week.
I sent 2 sketches in, 3 vox pops and 2 corrections. They all make me chuckle when I think about them but then I'm not claiming they're comedy gold. The sketches might be a bit generic for newsjack though, although I did put some topical stuff in. I think someone said above, if you like it then send it. I'm off to laugh at myself.
Thanks for those replies. I guess we all have to use our own 'filter'. Of course I wouldn't send crap in but it was more when the deadline comes before I'm able to make something the best it could be. If I came up with an unexpected and funny angle on something I'd still send even in not finished although they're usually the easiest (and sadly for me rarest!) to write.

If I could muster any more than the amount of sketches and vox pops that I do (this week no one liners at all) I would start some kind of selection process. What with my job, wife, two year old son and everything else, I steal four hours or so in the dead of night frantically trying to beat hot iron comedy over the anvil of news. This week I only fashioned three sketches. I guess that's probably a bad sign. Everybody here seems to have sketches and one liners on tap.
Biddy I know quite a few writers on here now and trust me none of us are sitting around with lots of time to write, between work, family, life etc. that's why I ran out of time this week too. So you're not alone there. And most weeks I think I'll never come up with anything again.
Having these deadlines helps force me to write what I can though and writing with (the lovely) Swerytd is great as I think it pushes us both more - even if it's a snatched email here and there it gets us thinking of ideas, and we get instant feedback whether we like it or not!

Welcome to the site Jinky - and yes good luck today!
So here's to another day of checking emails...
I'm still hoping to go to the recording so at least I'll be put out of my misery by then if not before. >_<
Teaming up does get the ideas flowing and is a good form of editing, spurring off new ideas, etc.

Dan I think your last comment was too brief and not punchy enough.
Jane, I have taken your comments on board and ignored them.
Dan
No change there then.
Ironically, cutting

Anybody manage to get anything in this weeks show?

Really bloody useful blog entry by Dan Tetsall...
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/writersroom/2010/01/newsjack_script_smart_or_smart.shtml
No news yet, for me. A close writer friend of mine has just secured the services of an agent, so it would be nice if I had something to celebrate too.
We do so hate it when our friends become successful!
I'm glad he's taking the time out to do the blog. At least it's feedback of a kind for all of us, however indirectly.
Everything will be perfectly formatted by next week. And then he's realise how shockingly bad all the material actually is...
