British Comedy Guide

Big Top critical and forum reaction Page 2

Some people like things that other people don't.

IMHO The most popular comedy, music, or anything really is very rarely the best available.

But it has a place, like most things. Just not near me please.

Maybe the whole problem is that summed up... "jokes on a message board". They are usually not funny, there only to showboat cynicism and I would have thought a forum and even a site such as this should be supporting, understanding, nurturing, celebrating and discussing the mechanics and workings of comedy rather than a tennis match of lazy swipes at work produced by people who do not mirror such behaviour when actually producing comedy and realising the work, effort and sheer luck that goes into it.

Forum tennis matches of back-slapping digs/compliments that think they are funny and amusing but tend not to be seem - to me - to be a waste of time when such energies could be put into writing comedy.

Sorry to be harsh. But it is something I and others have long noticed on writing forums. But horses for courses and all that....

Sounds like a panel show.

I have no idea who you are, 2ChristianTypists, but your blind devotion to Micheal Jacob is suspiciously typical of people who've won or done well in a BBC competition.

Place your bets, everyone.

I'm not quite sure where two or three posts mentioning and supporting Micheal Jacob's comments become "blind devotion" but never mind.

Some people will be snobby, some won't be, it's wrong to tar everyone, wannabe writer or not, with the same brush.

However, if you were to go on a film buffs message board, it is a teensy bit unlikely that they'll be talking in glowing terms about the latest Matthew Mcconaughey vehicle, whatever the merits of one might or might not be.

I agree. But isn't this discussion part of a "writers discussion" forum?

And most people who really want to write comedy, wrongly or rightly, will be loving and wanting to write shows like Peep Show, that's just the way it is.

Did you work on Big Top?

Surely that's just an opinion based on what you like and want to write. And I hate to say it... but TV already has PEEP SHOW. It wants new and original concepts and contexts that haven't even been thought of yet not echoes of what has already been a success.

Anyway if our jokes are so lame (which they are) let's see you providing some quick wit and hilarity instead of talking down to us all.

I don't believe I am talking down to anyone. Just offering a different perspective.

Did you work on Big Top?

No.

I would like to write something like Peep Show in as much as it was funny, original and contains excellent characters played by excellent actors. I do not want to write Peep Show.

Another issue is that a great many moaners on forums are coming at from the perspective of untried wannabee writers.

You say that like it is a bad thing, which is odd considering.

:)

But hang on, discussion needs a 'for' and 'against'. But you've discounted all the 'against' people as bitter wannabes who should shut up.

If you wannabee my lover you gotta get with my friends.

I'll get me coat. The point has been well made.
