For my media coursework I have to compare the general conventions of American and British sitcoms .......... SOMEONE PLEASE HELLLLLLLLLP !!!!!!!!

Joe, I believe that American sitcoms are far better, does anyone else agree?
A difficult one to compare. But generally, American sitcoms tend to favour life's winners, and British ones on life's losers.
I suggest putting on Comedy Central and watching a few shows, make note of the themes and types of characters, then go to G.O.L.D. or a good DVD collection and check out some British shows.
It's simple : British
I like American ones to but British are just better

I can only think of one American sitcom I like, so the Brits win it for me . . .

Marginally, the US takes it.
I couldn't say. Both countries have given us such high quality comedies that it's hard to say. If we were looking at today I'd say British comedy has been slightly outpacing American sitcoms in being funny and original.
British comedy for me. I grew up with it, I love it and want to be in it.
US comedy is like that welcome relative, who you just love but don't see very often. Although, the other US comedy is like that relative you don't like and see far too much of.
