The person whose work is critiqued with flattery and hypocrisy is losing out though, because they gain nothing than perhaps a false idea of their work.

And there lies the problem. The OP has no way of knowing whether positive feedback is a truly honest opinion or a nice, gentle back massage.

Tweedledum: Hey pal, I really enjoyed your latest sketch in Critique!

Tweedlebland: Really?

Tweedledum: No, it was shit. But you were nice to me at the last BCG meet, and I don't want to fall out with you.

I have no qualms about falling out with people. :)

As long as it's constructive and said nicely, no one should be scared of negative feedback. If someone doesn't like someone's feedback they need to either point out their case, just smile sweetly and ignore it, or take it on board.

That's one of the best posts I've read on here, Don.

It's a very good posting by Don but given that I yesterday received a public warning for suggesting that critiques might sometimes be biased by a critiquer's feelings for or knowledge of a writer, I'm glad I didn't post it.

In the lesbian sketch thread? Because I think it was more the fact you suggested Ben was using more than one account.

If you're right about why I got the warning, I'm grateful for your posting, Matthew.

The fact is I did NOT suggest Ben was using more than one account.

My joke was based upon the idea that there are various ways one might get better reviews - one way was to be a long-standing member with 6750 posts and the other was to be a friend of the Krays.

I then went into Harry Hill mode to suggest we find out which was the better way.

I then cancelled the ensuing 'f-i-i-i-i-i-i-ght' because Ben was both the person with with 6750 posts AND the person who was a friend of the Krays. He could hardly fight himself, could he?

The Kray claim was made as a joke by Ben and his post-count on that posting was 6750.

There was never a suggestion of two accounts.

Tweedlebland: (STEPS BACK IN HORROR) --- That was... you?

Tweedledum: Well, I know it was dark and you were pissed but ---

Tweedlebland: --- YOU?? I thought you were Matthew!

Tweedledum: No - Ben was f**king him in the next cubicle, silly.

We actually f**ked behind some bins after chucking out time. Bussell beat out a steady rhythm for us by banging a beer bottle against a skip.

You do realise that the post count listed by anyone's post is always their current total, don't you? Errr For example, when Ben posted his sketch last year his post count won't have been 6750 then either. Go look at your own old posts, you will only ever see your current post count by your name. (If you'd been here a year ago, for example, you would have seen that my post count then was less than 2000. I've been busy. This may help to rather go against your theory that post count influenced the critique of old sketches.)

Laughing out loud

You're a good sport and no mistake, Matthew! :D

That wasn't a beer bottle and it certainly wasn't a skip.
