British Comedy Guide

Making your own sitcom

Hi,

I keep reading about people making their own films on a tiny budget that go on to make big money at the cinemas and win all sorts of awards. Anyone thought about doing the same for their own comedy idea?

H

If it was up to TV's technical standards. I don't see why not? Not far off an independent production company making their own.

Surely there's enough shit cheapo comedy on the internets . . . ?

Speak of the Devil and the Slaggs appear. :$ :(

We've been looking at this strategy for a while and have concentrated on a few new scripts that include only sets, locations, and people that we know we have available. We've recently shot a test 20 minute pilot. Not the greatest acting, directing, camerawork (It is the Slaggs, after all) but it's a trial for a thirty minuter to be shot next few months.

We've entered the short into a few small festivals and indie film evenings around the UK and we're starting to get some good feedback from it. I haven't YouTubed it yet due to some of the Ts and Cs of some comps... Not that we'd win anything other than a visit from the Obscene Publications department.

If anyone knows of a resource that can get us in contact with local talent (actors, camera bods etc) let me know, eh?

:)

mandy.com and Talent Circle are two places to check out . . .

(and I make pretty print graphics for telly shows if you need any doing!)

For actors try posting an ad on http://www.uk.castingcallpro.com , where you will find quite a lot of actors who would be willing to work for little or no pay as long as you can give them expenses and material for their showreel on completion.

Similarly for crew you can try http://www.uk.filmcrewpro.com/ again you can advertise looking for people who are willing to work for low or no budget. You can get runners, editors, DOPs, make-up artists etc from this site.

Both are free to post on and I have found both extremely useful in the past.

Great sites. Am working my way through them. Cheers. :)

Tim, I'm sure the Exeter market is all sewn up. :D
