Honest Football Manager Page 2

There might be a way to make the subversion of he subversion work; the manager's team loses, the interviewer says something like, "disappointing result?", and the manager replies, "Not really - it's only the League Cup - who gives a f**k?"

Didn't like the part about everyone looking like rapists, seemed out of place. Other than that it's fine.

This is a good fully operating sketch idea but I think it's been done in an advert before. A football manager takes a swig of a drink (maybe lucozade) or a bite of a chocolate bar then they begin to speak the truth about the football match. Possibly followed by a line like 'refreshingly honest', I'm not sure but there is a big beeper going off in my mind that I've seen this concept done before. If not run with it!
:)

Was there an 'Honest John' car salesman character in something like the Fast Show? Is that what you were thinking, Giggle-o?

To be fair, the more I think about this bloke the more I like him, because it just pricks the PC world bubble in which we live. I'm tired of everyone having to express what they think others want to hear. A football manager in a higher division must be thinking these sorts of things. And, in fact, once his team had beaten them 12 - nil shouldn't we see him in the dressing room saying "12 bloody nil? You overpaid bunch of muppets - my bloody Nan would have scored 15 by half time. Is it any wonder I never play you in a proper match!" etc.

Personally as a comedy writer and a football fan I think the character of an "Honest Football Manager" who says it like it is rather than spouting the usual cliches is borderline genius, I could see it working in many different scenarios.

I like the sketch (subject to a little pruning) but agree with others in that the managers thoughts have to be proved correct, I don't think it'd be as funny if he got his comeuppance as it were.

I agree with most people especially Tony here. It's a great idea, and well done. You can't have the team get beaten. If you really wanted a twist the "come-uppance" could be that they only win 9-0, and the interviewer could goad him unsuccessfully about that.
