Third Life (RFTP reject)

Here was my rejected RFTP sketch. Yes, I've since realised that Afinkawan's 'First Life' sketch covered similar subject matter in series 2 of said show. That said, I think(/hope?) the spin is different enough. Not that it matters, cos they didn't want it anyway.

Third Life
=====================
ADVERT. VOICEOVER FROM THE GUY WHO JUST LOST HIS E4 ANNOUNCING JOB.

VOICEOVER:
'Second Life' boring and mundane? 'Second Life' job stale without career prospects? Failed at your life *all* *over* *AGAIN*!? Then you need... 'Third Life'!

GRAMS:EXCITING MUSIC WITH THUMPING BASELINE KICKS IN

VOICEOVER:
Become a rock star! Or a stunt man! Or just bugger it all up all over again and get yet another job in an office! Loser!

GRAMS:EXCITING MUSIC INSTRUMENTAL

VOICEOVER:
Go into therapy again! Again! This time it's one further dimension of reality away! Fail to get friends for a THIRD TIME!

GRAMS:FURTHER EXCITING MUSIC INSTRUMENTAL

VOICEOVER:
Virtual therapist advising you to 'get a life'? Well, now you can! Literally! 'Third Life' – download it from your virtual internet within an internet now!

SMALLPRINT VOICE:
(QUICKLY) You can only get out what you put in. Sloth is a sin. 'Fourth, Fifth & Sixth Lives' will be released imminently to help you cope with your cyclic failure, but at least get you even further away from your disappointed parents. Don't forget you let them down, you failure.

VOICEOVER:
Third Life! Reserve your copy now! Deadbeat!

END

I liked the conceit - and the smallprint stuff at the end - but I'm not sure it worked as an advert. I wonder if you could have rejigged the sketch so that we saw somebody using Third Life? Introduced conflict as somebody tries to dissuade a saddo from signing up, but then gets sucked in themselves?

I remember seeing this one and liking it. Did they go for your interactive button one-liners instead then (feel free to not tell me if I'm prying)?

Yacob -- Yeah, and asked for some more! :)

Cheers chip. Good idea at the end -- might try and rewrite for next year -- I've only got Bussell's porpoise thing to contend with ;)

Slag.

Nice sketch, though I wonder if the Second Life subject is a bit tired. Does anyone play it anymore - I haven't heard mention of it in ages.

My original idea was actually Third Life - for when your avatar got bored with playing Second Life, you could send it to go play Third Life within Second Life. Or something. I sort of pitched it like that, didn't get very far and went, "erm...or how about advertising real life as if it was a computer game like second life" and got a yes.

Sorry, waffled a bit there. What I meant to say was that your sketch is a lovely little conceit. There's definitely something in there so it would be worth keeping the idea bubbling over until you get a new angle to write it from. Something more accessible to people who don't play those types of computer games perhaps.

Cheers. Yeah, I think you're right. Having it shown it to a few people, one didn't know what Second Life was, so it was completely lost on them.

I see I'm just like you then, Af', only two or three years behind. I'm basically you on Dave... :)

Ta for feedback, everyone. I'll keep the idea in mind until something Second Life-like is back in public consciousness and maybe twist it that little bit further.
