Gavin & Stacey - Series 3 Page 4

No sitcom requires you to be an expert on a nation, you are being offensive by calling someone an idiot. Its true that I've met English people that are just the same, Russian's too - they exist everywhere. So why be so offended that they are depicted as Welsh in a Welsh-English sitcom? Are the English characters in the show positive reflections on England? I don't think so.

Our friend indicated that this was a true reflection of his experiences in Wales and his vast experience of working with one bloke. He didn't seem to allow for the fact that there's a rumour going around that not all Welsh people are like this. And he is an idiot if he thinks this.

Jim, I apologise, however, I totally disagree with you. My wife Dawn and I have been on several outings to Wales and I used to work a Welsh gentleman called Owain and I feel the stanrage habits and idiosyncracies, eccentricm uptight behaviour and occasionaly simple mindedness of the welsh people I have encountered is accurately depicted in this series.

But as you can see, we're only occasionally simple minded. Which is nice.

But he said it reflected the welsh people he's encountered, he didn't claim all of Wales. It's not his fault if he met some low-lives.

It's true Welsh people are generally depicted quite badly in comedy, usually by non-Welsh writers, but in this case I think everyone is game.

The characters in this show are far too basic and two-dimensional to cause any offence to anybody, surely.

Note to Mods: This thread needs to be locked as it was set up to inquire into the possibility of a third series of the show and is now being used to post critical comments.

There is an existing thread for this which covers all series to date and the Christmas special.

I went into Hereford the other day and a guy screamed in my face for no apparent reason. I then went to a pub where there was very nearly a fight. I don't think these people were a true reflection of every English person in 'England' or even Hereford. I will allow for the fact that perhaps these were just a couple of idiots I ran in to. But according to IT his experiences validate his opinion of Welsh people as a whole. Not true and my mother would definitly give him a clip around the ear!

As for the show it doesn't cause offence. There are some one eyed narrow minded Welsh Nationalists out there but then you guys have the BNP (although they are trying this side of the border as well)

I just found that bit of the show very retrospective. It's a personnal thing.

Roscoff. Sincere apligsies corutesy of one South Sheild based IT worker. As I have just explained in another thread I was not claiming the Welsh people I have met were totally representative of Wales, I was simply saying that from my experience the Welsh people in Gavin and Stacey did accurately reflect some Welsh people in real life.

Though, you have got me slightly worried and one of the prayers I offer this evening may be that your mother never comes to South Shields! Laughs out loud.

And as I said in the other thread please make this clear because it didn't come over like that. The facts are that of course there are some dickheads in Wales. Some think that because you're not Welsh that you are some kind of moron. But they are not the majority. They can be the loudest though which is annoying.

Inaccurate in so much as it depicted a decades old stereotype that has long since been discredited as nonsense.

Innacurate in so much as it directly correlated the Welsh language with anti-English feeling. This is garbage.

The whole thing smacked of creeping to the master; Ruth Jones is happy to play a stupid, poor, English language Welsh woman - she knows her place at the table and wants to keep it. I happen to think that this is unneccessary, but Ruth Jones has form in this area (ref: her appearance on Brydon's documentary 'Identity Crisis'.)

A better, and more realistic, way of dealing with the friction between some Welsh speakers and some non-speakers would have been to depict the Welsh speakers as aloof, Obama-esque intellectuals, lording it over the 'commoners'. That's the reality, and I think it could be mined quite well by a DECENT WRITER without a huge chip on her fat shoulder.

Very weird.

It's just titled Gavin & Stacey series 3 so I thought it reasonable. Also it's probably older than the other thread.

I personnally find this kind of comment offensive. You are obviously one of the idiots.

Am I another one?

Am I another one?

Yes, yes you are Chappers but you're my kind of idiot (ruffles his hair and pinches his cheeks in a 'you little rascal' fashion).

I've always found it very watchable.
I'm not a massive fan but I'm glad it's back for a new series.

Never was an avid fan, but watched it, was very dissapointed in last series, so wouldnt miss a further series if they make one
