Gavin & Stacey - Series 3 Page 3

the smoking just wasn't funny. Who in their right mind who doesn't smoke would want to try it for a laugh?

A very drunk person perhaps?

Poor, I thought. An episode to tell us that they would end up in bed together, which was alway going to happen, didn't laugh once. I'm guessing the rest of the series will end this way, up until the last one when they'll go over the top with a shock tactic finale ending.

S'alright. Nothing special, and no real laughs.

The pretend interview I found very funny.

As someone on here has already mentioned, Tim Watson I think it was, there is a real sense of self-awareness and indulgence to the whole content. This is especially true in the performance of the fat man and the fat woman; yes, I am sure you are happy that you get to be the 'stars' even though you are large units with blunted fascias - but this should not stop you from maintaining some level of Quality.

Also, the swipe at the Welsh 'nationalists' was dreadfully inaccurrate and unfunny - drawn with crayon, at best.

This show is an illness.

How so?

Inaccurate in so much as it depicted a decades old stereotype that has long since been discredited as nonsense.

Innacurate in so much as it directly correlated the Welsh language with anti-English feeling. This is garbage.

The whole thing smacked of creeping to the master; Ruth Jones is happy to play a stupid, poor, English language Welsh woman - she knows her place at the table and wants to keep it. I happen to think that this is unneccessary, but Ruth Jones has form in this area (ref: her appearance on Brydon's documentary 'Identity Crisis'.)

A better, and more realistic, way of dealing with the friction between some Welsh speakers and some non-speakers would have been to depict the Welsh speakers as aloof, Obama-esque intellectuals, lording it over the 'commoners'. That's the reality, and I think it could be mined quite well by a DECENT WRITER without a huge chip on her fat shoulder.

Jim, I apologise, however, I totally disagree with you. My wife Dawn and I have been on several outings to Wales and I used to work a Welsh gentleman called Owain and I feel the stanrage habits and idiosyncracies, eccentricm uptight behaviour and occasionaly simple mindedness of the welsh people I have encountered is accurately depicted in this series.

That's probably how most people start, get drunk and try it. I know I've done that.

I like G&S, its like spending time with old friends. They make me want to enjoy the show and I do. There aren't that many huge belly laughs but I'm always smiling throughout and chuckling at the subtly of some of the humour which I know a lot of the detractors (I'm not saying all) are just missing.

Yeah, I've met such people too, its not just a stereotype. Plus Ruth Jones should know, she's Welsh!

Bang on actually. Your comment that is. The whole episode was pretty poor and the characters are becoming so obnoxious that I'm finding it very difficult to enjoy this series. Having said that the interview bit was good. But is that enough in a half hour sitcom?

I personnally find this kind of comment offensive. You've been to Wales several times and worked with a Welsh bloke. This apparently makes you an expert on the Welsh nation. I spend a fair time over the border these days and find that actually there is no distinction between the English and Welsh. The fact is you'll find idiots and nice people in equal measure. You are obviously one of the idiots.

And if so, not the only one on this thread! (Not you Roscoff).

He (Owain) sounds like the wind beneath your wings in all honesty.

Anyway, good to hear from you. Can you answer mine and Mark P's IT question yet?

No sitcom requires you to be an expert on a nation, you are being offensive by calling someone an idiot. Its true that I've met English people that are just the same, Russian's too - they exist everywhere. So why be so offended that they are depicted as Welsh in a Welsh-English sitcom? Are the English characters in the show positive reflections on England? I don't think so.
