Have an idea for a sketch, but it will probably involve lots of searching through archive material. Basically, I'm wanting to use bits of Most Haunted for my sketch. This is probably a dumb question, but: Do I find the material first and write around it or do I write the sketch first and go in search of the right scene? I'm guessing it's the former. But what have people's experiences been, who have done dis sort of ting before?

I would guess get the clip first.
You don't want to write something and then not find a suitable clip.
Unless you fancy spending months trawling through the archive for precisely the right clip to illustrate your brilliant gag, then I would suggest the former approach.

I'm wanting to write it before I forget it, but won't be able to make it yet as it will require me filming my own material too. I've never been very good at writing notes down. Hopefully I'll be able to come back to this thread and remember what the **** I was on about.

I used both techniques. Initially, I wrote a basic script with a narrative and then Googled images and bought piles of DVDs. I watched the lot in a huge sitting. Any scenes or gags that matched what I'd written, I'd make a note of and then edited them. Any new jokes or lines that suggested themselves from other unrelated scenes, I either inserted into the running script or made a note of them for others in the planned series.
If you can handle hours of Ancorah then I'd go into the project looking for the scene you want but also looking for potential followups.
