I was just thinking about how some people are credited with coming up with the original idea for a show, even though they may not actually write for it, and was wondering, do they keep getting paid, as long as the show is made?

I suppose it would entirely depend on what they deal they signed. I believe Pegg and Stevenson didn't have any continuing rights for Spaced.

If it's drawn up in a contract or you fight for the rights. Depends if you want to take action.

I came up with the ET film, but where's my money huh?!

Were you in the womb?

Whose womb? Smarmy

Spielberg's...?

I'm his and George Lucas's love child. ;)

I can see Lucas with a womb to be honest.

Did you mean, Lucas is a womb?

It's should be all set out in your initial writer's contract for the development deal, as are your rights pertaining to writing the show through to the end of first series. On mine it's very specific about having a single card in the credits stating "Created and Written by", for example. Your financial benefits for creating a show you end-up not writing for should be also contained in that initial contract. It's important for your agent to protect your author's rights as much as possible in your initial contract. This will include overseas rights etc.

:D Can't wait to see that, Tim. That is the dream Cool

Well, we'll see... Perhaps one day. *crosses fingers* On the more immediate front I will finally get my money soon, which although I consider it a bonus, is still very welcome at the moment. :)

Do you get paid to write the rest of the series or is it a payment for the pilot? If that's not too personal.

I'm being paid for the pilot and the pilot story, delivery of the various drafts as acceptable by the production company (work which has all been done). The per-episode fee for writing any 1st series commissioned (which assumes 6 episodes) is also fixed in the contract.

Ah, right. But if it's anything to go by what you told me, that's not too bad for a bit o' writing is it? :D
