Sitcom (Com)Mission Page 94
Quote: bushbaby @ August 11 2010, 11:31 PM BSTI knew a publisher that photostated a whole manuscript, sent the original back to the writer saying it was no good. They passed on the photocopy to one of their known writers who rewrote a bit and changed character names and got it published, it was a best seller........but don't tell anyone I told you this.....
Don't worry BB, your secret is safe with me.

I downloaded some free games and now words on web pages randomly get double unlined.
Most excelently it now makes it look like everyone's being sarcastic.
Quote: bushbaby @ August 11 2010, 11:31 PM BSTAgain someone I know wrote a fab TV series about builders in the south. It was nicked by a TV company and given to one of their own writers.....it became a success.
Now tell me about nepotism
I know so many similar stories it'd make your hair curl and put you off writing forever
Certainly. "Nepotism" means bestowing favours on the basis of family relationships. What you're describing is "plagiarism". But an interesting story anyway! And my hair is already curly, so I'm safe. :-)
I had this great idea where Sherlock Holmes is like a 20th century emo and texts all the time. That bloke out of the office is Watson and looks like he can't remember if he shit himself.
And Moriarty is a gaymo with epilepsy.
Did anything happen to it?
How does one send a PM, I tried to send you one Griff but it says I have to say who it is to but when I click the down menu your name isn't on it ???????

I've replied.
Quote: Griff @ August 11 2010, 11:01 PM BSTBushbaby... if you think modern TV is rubbish, why are you trying to write for it? That's not me being arsey, it's a serious question. Why not write for something you personally find worthwhile, like novels, or radio, or theatre or film or poetry or whatever? Is it really more important to "get something on telly" than to be happy with what you are writing for?
Griff, do you really think that bad writers should be replaced by other bad writers? Surely the whole reason we're not still living in the trees is that we want better all the time. It does no good calling people 'cretins' but it's practical to examine what works and what doesn't.
Remember Griff, this isn't a TV opportunity, this is a theatre opportunity. There are so few opportunities that it may be hard to find the real worthwhile opportunity-whatever that means-or people that get you. If Bushbaby finds Doctor Who the best programme on TV for instance it doesn't necessarily mean he can write for them.
I think I set the thread on a road to 'off topic'......sorry

Tim, I know what the Sitcom Mission is, thanks, I've had three sitcoms produced by them.
Also Bushbaby is a lady not a chap, as it says in her signature.
But yes you are right, one of the reasons people submit scripts to TV is that they think they can do better than what's on. HOWEVER. Bushbaby frequently raises two objections to the world of television, as follows - which I'll comment on as they personify a very common attitude on here:
(1) "All modern TV comedy is absolute rubbish". Well, obviously, it isn't, there is always good stuff out there if you look for it. For example a lot of people are enjoying Rev at the moment. But if you really don't like anything that gets on TV at all, which some people here apparently don't, then go and write for some other medium where you do like the things that are getting produced, where you are more likely to be in tune with what producers want.
(2) "TV is run by cheats and nepotists who are out to swindle honest writers". If you genuinely believe this and still send scripts in, it's like saying "My local pub is full of thieves" and going out of your way to leave your wallet in it every week, and then being upset and disappointed when it's stolen.
I still send out to the indies but have given up otherwise. Sitcom mission is different and run fairly plus the short listers' work is produced and performed to an audience so that seems to be the fairest system IMO
Aaron will be telling us off soon
But surely the point of Sitcom Mission is that it only has value as a stepping stone to getting your script into the hands of TV/Radio executives? At which point all of your objections remain, BB, about TV being run by cretins who don't know funny etc. and who are out to swindle you ?

Aaron couldn't give a crap about Writing discussions. He hates the writers.
