The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. It sucked. Steve Carell and Steve Buscemi as two has-been Vegas magicians, Jim Carrey as an edgy gross-out street magician and Alan Arkin as an old geezer. Actors all fine, but the script and direction sucked dick. Veered between forced emotional schmaltz and predictable dumbness. A million times better was the Magicians film with the two stars of Peep Show. Highest/saddest point was James Gandolfini as a Vegas casino tycoon/impresario.
Ha, I liked it.
Groundhog Day.

I have always been fond of magic, so really wanted to like it. But the veering between Hollywood morality lessons and formulaic silliness was offputting. And such a dumb ending - not only for Jim Carrey's character (no depth, just a pointless zany/gross creation), but also the lame-ass final magic trick. And the joke about the tiger magician getting his neck bitten - yeah, freakin hilarious. Funny when The Simpsons pre-empted the tiger attack on Roy (of tiger show magicians Siegfried and Roy) by several years, but not funny 10 years after the actual attack that finished their act. And the romance between Carell and female lead was oh so forced and stupendously phony.
QUESTION: I saw The Sweeney movie in the DVD shop. Is it any good? Did James Cotter make the cut?
Me and my girlfriend laughed alot. Oh well.
The Sweeney? I got bored after about 20mins
That's hardly a glowing endorsement of The Sweeney. No Cotter?
No sure if I got that far.
Maybe I wasn't in the right mood, but it just did my head in.

Are you working your way through a list of "classic" comedies, David?

Yeah. Jumping Jack Flash is next on my list.

That's not quite as "classic" as the previous two, if at all.
What's the source of your list/how did you compile it?
And what's next after JJF?
